How to Fix ESD Issues in 3D Printed Test Fixtures
Every now and then, we run into weird static problems with our 3D printed test fixtures. Especially the ones with moving parts.
As the plastic pieces slide past each other, they generate just enough static to fry an I2C bus or mess with a voltage sense line. ESD protection at the connector helps, but it doesn’t solve the real issue: static discharging through the UUT to some lower potential.
Our solution? Simple: Earth ground the enclosure.
Okay, technically you can’t ground plastic, but what we do is embed metal tabs or hardware that are tied to earth ground inside the assembly. This bleeds off any charge buildup and massively reduces ghost failures.
Sometimes it's a plate. Sometimes it's just a screw. In this fixture, we used the hinge rod as the grounding path. That gets tied directly to earth via the AC inlet ground.
