If you're looking for a charming spot to begin your Connecticut food journey, Blue Back Square in downtown West Hartford is a perfect place to start. With its cozy, walkable streets and vibrant dining scene, it offers a little something for every foodie. I had the chance to visit three delicious spots, and here’s what I loved most!

🍦 Milkcraft A Sweet Dream in Every Scoop

This place is an ice cream lover’s summer paradise. The Red Velvet ice cream ($12) is rich, creamy, and indulgent without being overly sweet. The texture is smooth but thick, like frozen custard, and the red velvet base has that signature cocoa-vanilla undertone. But what really makes it shine? The toppings.

While indoor seating is limited, there are a couple of benches right outside, perfect for enjoying your ice cream under the sun. The staff here are super friendly and helpful, especially if it’s your first time and you’re unsure what to pick. Ask for recommendations, they know what they’re doing!

🌮 bartaco Small Tacos, Big Flavors

This is hands down one of the best taco spots in the area. Their seafood selection is especially outstanding. The tacos are smaller in size, so I recommend ordering 3 or 4 for a satisfying meal. Trust me, you’ll want more anyway.

Taco Lineup I Tried:

- Baja Fish Taco ($2.50):

Crispy on the outside, moist and flaky inside. The batter is light and not greasy. The chipotle slaw brings heat and tang, giving each bite a nice kick.

- Carne Asada Taco ($3.50):

This one’s for the meat lovers. The steak is tender with a smoky, citrusy flavor. The avocado salsa mellows it out and adds creaminess.

- Crispy Rock Shrimp Taco ($3.50):

My personal favorite! Crunchy, perfectly seasoned shrimp with a flavorful remoulade that feels like elevated street food. The lemon slaw adds a fresh, zingy lift.

- Seared Swordfish Taco ($3.50):

The swordfish is delicate and seared just right. The avocado crema adds richness, while the pickled cabbage balances it with acidity and crunch.

🍜 Mẹcha Noodle Bar, Comfort in a Bowl.

This was my second visit to Mẹcha, and once again, it did not disappoint. I had the Shoyu Paitan Ramen ($13.50) a comforting chicken broth with black garlic, corn, scallions, chili oil, and a soft-boiled egg that was beautifully runny.

The broth is mild but rich in flavor, and the roasted chicken was tender and satisfying. It’s the kind of dish that warms you up from the inside out. If you're into ramen, this spot should definitely be on your list
