จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวที่เลี้ยงสุนัขมาอย่างยาวนาน ผมพบว่าใครหลายคนมักเข้าใจผิดว่าการที่หมากระดิกหางหมายถึงความสุขหรือความดีใจเท่านั้น อันที่จริงแล้วสุนัขสื่อสารผ่านหางด้วยหลายรูปแบบที่ซับซ้อนมากกว่าที่คิด เมื่อผมหัดสังเกตหางของน้องหมาครั้งหลัง ๆ ก็เริ่มเข้าใจว่าต้องดูควบคู่กับท่าทางอื่นด้วย เช่น สีหน้าตา หู หรือแม้แต่ท่าทางของลำตัว ตัวอย่างเช่น ตอนที่น้องหมากระดิกหางอย่างแรง พร้อมกับตัวส่ายและตาเป็นประกาย แสดงว่าน้องกำลังดีใจและอยากเล่นด้วย แต่เมื่อกระดิกหางเร็วแต่หวังตั้งสูง มันอาจหมายถึงน้องกำลังตื่นตัวและประเมินสถานการณ์อยู่ ซึ่งถ้าเราไม่สังเกตให้ดี อาจเข้าใจผิดคิดว่าน้องไม่มีอะไรร้ายแรง ทั้งนี้หากเราเจอสุนัขแปลกหน้า ควรใจเย็นและไม่เข้าไปจับทันที เพื่อไม่ให้น้องรู้สึกถูกคุกคาม บางครั้งน้องหมาจะกระดิกหางช้า ๆ และหางตกต่ำร่วมกับท่าทางที่ไม่แน่ใจ เหมือนกำลังคิดหรือตัดสินใจว่าสิ่งที่พบเจอปลอดภัยหรือไม่ ซึ่งเราควรให้น้องหมาได้เวลาทำความคุ้นเคยก่อนเสมอ อีกทั้งหากเห็นหางถูกหนีบระหว่างขา นั่นคือสัญญาณความกลัวที่ชัดเจนที่สุด ควรหลีกเลี่ยงการบังคับน้องหมาให้เผชิญกับสิ่งที่กลัวอย่างเร่งด่วน ผมเองก็เคยเจอสุนัขที่กระดิกหางสั้น ๆ แข็ง ๆ และจ้องเขม็งด้วยหน้าตาเกร็ง ๆ แสดงว่าไม่สบายใจและพร้อมปกป้องตัวเอง ในช่วงนั้นผมจะแนะนำให้คนรอบข้างถอยห่างและปล่อยให้น้องหมารู้สึกปลอดภัยโดยไม่ถูกรบกวน สุดท้ายแล้ว การเข้าใจภาษาหางสุนัขได้ดี จะช่วยสร้างสายสัมพันธ์ที่ดีและทำให้น้องหมารู้สึกไว้วางใจและปลอดภัยกับเราได้มากขึ้นจริง ๆ การสังเกตหางเพียงอย่างเดียวไม่พอ ต้องดูควบคู่กับภาษากายอื่น ๆ รวมทั้งพฤติกรรมโดยรวมของน้องด้วย เพื่อให้เราเป็นเจ้าของที่เข้าใจและดูแลเค้าได้อย่างถูกต้องและเต็มใจมากที่สุด
