Book Review: Break The Good Girl Myth

Title: Break The Hood Girl Myth

Author: Majo Molfino

Rating: 4.5/5⭐️

I stumbled upon this book in the middle of 2020, when so was doing some would searching in the middle of the pandemic. Majo Molfino used design thinking along with the five myths of being a “good girl” to explain how we can break away from these myths and design a life that we want.

I am constantly recommending this book to my family & friends. It does a great job at breaking down the various mythical elements about being a woman.

... Read moreAfter diving into 'Break The Good Girl Myth,' I realized how deeply ingrained some of these societal expectations are. It’s not just about being polite or agreeable; it's about a whole set of unspoken 'fundamentals' that can hold us back from our true potential. Have you ever felt like you're constantly seeking external validation, or that saying 'no' feels like a monumental task? That's the 'good girl' conditioning at play, and it's something I've been actively working to shed. One of the biggest takeaways for me was understanding that these aren't innate qualities; they're often 'outdated rules' passed down through generations. Once you recognize them, the journey to 'dismantle' them truly begins. For instance, I used to feel immense guilt anytime I prioritized my own needs over someone else's. Now, I'm learning to set healthier boundaries, realizing that self-care isn't selfish, but necessary for me to show up fully in other areas of my life. This shift has been a game-changer in how I manage my energy and time. The book really inspired me to look at my life through the lens of 'design thinking,' asking myself: what kind of life do I want to build? Not what life is expected of me. It’s about being an active architect of your own destiny. Think about it: if you were designing your ideal self, what would she embody? Would she always put others first to her own detriment, or would she confidently 'unleash her power' and pursue her passions with conviction? Practically, this has meant consciously challenging my own assumptions. When I feel that familiar urge to apologize for things I haven't done wrong, or to sugarcoat my opinions, I pause. I ask myself, 'Is this me, or is this the 'good girl myth' talking?' It's a small internal dialogue, but it’s powerful. I’ve also started dedicating time to pursuits that genuinely light me up, even if they don't seem 'productive' to others. This process is all about reclaiming my agency and shaping a life that feels authentic to ME. It’s a continuous journey, of course. There are days when the old habits creep back in. But having the framework from books like 'Break The Good Girl Myth' has made me so much more aware. It's about consciously choosing to step into a space where I can truly 'design a more purposeful life,' one where my voice is heard, my needs are met, and my power is fully embraced. If you're grappling with similar feelings, I highly recommend exploring how you can start to question and transform these ingrained 'good girl' tendencies. It's liberating!
