It's one of those Bible verses that just cuts straight to the core of our motivations. The passage reads: 'Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.'
Wow. Just reading that again gives me chills. It’s a direct challenge to how I often navigate my daily life, and perhaps yours too. How many times do we find ourselves making decisions, speaking (or staying silent), or even presenting ourselves in a certain way, all because we're secretly longing for that nod of approval from others? Whether it's from friends, family, colleagues, or even strangers on social media, the desire to be liked and accepted can be incredibly powerful.
I’ve personally struggled with this throughout my Christian journey. There are so many instances where I've caught myself trying to 'please people' instead of truly serving Christ. It might be softening my stance on a biblical truth to avoid conflict, or participating in conversations that don't align with my values just to fit in. This verse from Galatians 1:10 NIV reminds me that this isn't just a slight deviation; it's a fundamental conflict of allegiance.
The question 'Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?' really makes you pause and examine your heart. What truly drives us? Is it the fleeting praise of man, which can change as quickly as the wind, or the unwavering, eternal approval of God? The text is clear: if our primary goal is to please people, then we cannot genuinely be servants of Christ. We can’t serve two masters, especially when their desires are often at odds.
For a long time, I mistook kindness and compassion for people-pleasing. But there's a vital difference. Being kind, loving, and compassionate is a reflection of Christ in us. People-pleasing, on the other hand, is driven by fear of rejection, a desire for validation, or an unwillingness to stand for truth. It compromises our integrity and, ultimately, our relationship with God. The OCR of this image, highlighting the tension between 'seeking approval from humans or God,' perfectly captures this internal battle.
This Galatians 1:10 bible verse is a call to radical authenticity in our faith. It's about having the courage to live out our convictions, even when unpopular, and to speak truth in love, even when it might ruffle feathers. It means trusting that God's approval is the only one that truly matters. When I focus on serving Christ, an amazing thing happens: a deep peace settles in, knowing I am aligned with His will, regardless of external reactions.
So, as I reflect on this 'Verse of the Day,' I’m challenging myself, and I invite you to do the same: Where in my life am I still trying to please people? How can I shift my focus entirely to serving Christ? Let's aim to live lives that genuinely reflect His glory, not just to gain human applause.
LOVE THIS! A lot of people don’t know that they have a people pleasing problem. They care more about what other people think of them more than what God thinks of them. They make people their idol instead of God.
