Some Belle appreciation

Oh my gosh, you guys! I've been bursting to share more about my latest cosplay adventure: bringing Belle, the beautiful Sleeping Car from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Starlight Express, to life! If you've never seen the show, it's pure magic on roller skates, and Belle is such an iconic character with her vibrant purple futuristic costume and those incredible high buns. I’ve always been drawn to her elegance and the sheer theatricality of the entire musical. It's truly a dream come true to embody such a dynamic character. When I decided to tackle Belle's look, the first thing that came to mind was getting that signature purple just right. It’s not just any purple; it’s a regal, almost electric shade that really pops under stage lights. Finding the right fabric for her costume was a mission – something with a slight shimmer but still comfortable enough to move (and skate!) in. I spent hours poring over reference photos to get the details of her futuristic design just right. From the silver accents on her bodice to the way her sleeves are structured, every piece contributes to that 'sleeping car' aesthetic, making it feel authentic and elaborate. And let's talk about the hair! Belle's purple hair, styled in those distinctive buns, is such a crucial part of her silhouette. I experimented with a few different wig styles before settling on one that perfectly captured her look. Securing those buns so they stay put, especially when you're moving around like a train on skates, is a skill in itself! For makeup, I aimed for something expressive that would read well from a distance, with a focus on big, bright eyes, just like performers on stage. The goal was to capture that energetic, smiling persona that Belle is known for. Of course, you can't be Belle without the roller skates! This was probably the most challenging but also the most fun part. Learning to pose and even 'dance' in character while on skates takes practice, but it truly makes you feel like you're part of the Starlight Express cast. There's a special kind of thrill in embodying a character that literally glides across the stage, it's incredibly empowering and adds so much to the performance aspect of the cosplay. Capturing these backstage moments was just as special. Seeing fellow performers in their elaborate, colorful costumes, sharing smiles and laughs before and after shows – it really adds to the experience. It’s not just about the final look; it’s about the camaraderie and the shared passion for these incredible musicals.
