... Read moreHaving dealt with faulty refrigerators in my own home and from what I've seen as an electrician, I've realized that intermittent cooling issues often mask bigger electrical problems that can seriously endanger a household. One key aspect I always emphasize to friends and clients is regularly testing the ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker). Pressing the test button monthly ensures it can trip correctly in case of leakage, which can prevent potentially fatal electric shocks or fires caused by aging refrigerator wiring or compressor insulation failures. Another practical experience is never to ignore the early signs like frequent tripping breakers or odd smells near the fridge. These often point to short circuits or electrical arcs inside the appliance. In one case, a neighbor delayed repairs and ended up with a burned compressor and wiring that led to a full kitchen power shutdown. Besides electrical hazards, fluctuating fridge temperatures can spoil food quickly, leading to gastrointestinal illnesses. To avoid this, checking the door seals and ensuring no heavy frost buildup obstructs airflow are simple first steps every homeowner can take. When assessing whether to repair or replace a problematic fridge, remember that repeated compressor damage or refrigerant leaks typically mean higher eventual costs and risks. Investing in a new refrigerator might save money and enhance safety in the long run. In summary, combining regular self-checks of electrical safety devices, prompt professional inspections for faults, and understanding the limits of your appliance’s lifespan helps maintain a safe and efficient household environment.
