What is your favorite kale to eat

2024/11/20 Edited to

... Read moreI totally agree with trying new things in the garden – it's so exciting! This year, I’ve been loving Dinosaur Kale too, but it got me thinking, with so many varieties out there, how do we really pick the *best kale to eat*? It's not just about one type, right? It's about finding what works for your taste buds and your cooking style. And honestly, for me, when it comes to healthy greens, it's always a big 'Kale yeah!' Let's dive into some of the different types of kale I've explored and what makes them stand out. Curly Kale vs. Dinosaur Kale: A Taste & Texture Showdown My journey often starts with the classic Curly Kale. Its ruffled, vibrant green leaves are probably what most people picture when they hear "kale." I find its texture can be a bit tougher, but that makes it fantastic for kale chips – they get super crispy! The kale flavor is quite robust, sometimes a little bitter, which mellows nicely when massaged with dressing or cooked down. It's a powerhouse for smoothies too, blending in without overpowering everything. Then there's Dinosaur Kale, also known as Lacinato Kale or Tuscan Kale. This is the one that's stolen my heart this year! Its deep blue-green leaves are long and narrow with a crinkly, almost prehistoric texture (hence the 'dinosaur' name!). I find Lacinato vs. curly kale to be a fascinating comparison. Dinosaur Kale has a slightly sweeter, more earthy flavor compared to curly kale, and its leaves are more tender. This makes it absolutely perfect for sautéing with garlic, tossing into a hearty pasta dish, or even using raw in salads after a good massage. It just feels a bit more refined, if that makes sense? Beyond these two, there's also Red Russian Kale with its flat, oak-leaf shaped leaves and purple stems, offering a sweeter, milder flavor, and Siberian Kale, which is very hardy and has a slightly peppery taste. Each has its own unique charm! Which is the Healthiest Type of Kale? This is a question I get asked a lot! When we talk about the healthiest type of kale or the *healthiest kale variety*, the good news is that all kale is incredibly nutritious. They are packed with vitamins K, A, and C, powerful antioxidants, and plenty of fiber. However, there can be slight variations. For example, some studies suggest Lacinato Kale might have a slightly higher concentration of certain antioxidants. But honestly, the biggest benefit comes from simply eating kale regularly, regardless of the variety! For us women, kale offers fantastic benefits. Its high Vitamin K content is crucial for bone health, and the Vitamin A and C are wonderful for skin radiance and immune support. Plus, the fiber aids in digestion and can help with weight management. So, whether it's kale benefits for women or just overall well-being, you can't go wrong. Finding Your Best Tasting Kale Ultimately, the best tasting kale is subjective and often depends on how you prepare it. If you're new to kale, I'd suggest starting with Dinosaur Kale, especially if you plan to sauté or add it to soups, as its milder flavor and tender texture are very approachable. For a super crisp snack, curly kale chips are unbeatable! My personal tip for any kale is to always remove the tough central stem and massage the leaves with a little olive oil and lemon juice if you're eating it raw. This breaks down the fibers, making it more tender and less bitter. So, go ahead and explore! Try different types, experiment with cooking methods, and you'll find your own 'Kale yeah!' moment and discover your absolute favorite. What's your next kale adventure?
