Usually, I max out around level 9 and can only hold that for around 5 to 10 minutes due to both physical exhaustion and mental fatigue. What surprised me the most was the mental shift into what I can only describe as a 'full bore intensity flow state.' Flow state, often referred to as being 'in the zone,' is where your mind achieves total focus and immersion in the activity, which makes physically demanding tasks feel more manageable. On this occasion, despite climbing at levels 11 to 13—which I normally find extremely challenging—I felt a strong sense of mental clarity and muscular endurance. I also noticed the reactions from people around me, as they seemed to think my sustained pace was unusual or even borderline extreme. This response highlighted how rare it is for most gym-goers to enter such a high-intensity flow. Sustaining that level took conscious effort to maintain deep breathing, controlled movements, and positive self-talk. Additionally, comparing this to my past climbing experience wearing a 45lb vest years ago at a slower pace, I realized the importance of pacing and mental resilience in pushing personal records. Wearing extra weight made me more cautious, but this time, with lighter load and higher intensity, it was the mental aspect that carried me through. For anyone aiming to improve their stairclimber workouts or break through personal limits, I recommend focusing on cultivating your mental flow state alongside physical training. Techniques such as mindfulness, setting small incremental goals, and using rhythm in your movement can help. This experience reaffirmed that personal records aren't just about physical strength but also about mental toughness and flow. Embracing these concepts can make your workouts more rewarding and help you achieve new fitness milestones.
