Mental health hacks, hygiene edition.

Struggling with Hygiene? You’re Not Alone.

Living with mental illness can be disorienting and exhausting—I know because I live with a grocery list of them! Healing isn’t linear, and if you’re late-diagnosed, just surviving can feel like an uphill battle.

One of the hardest things? Basic hygiene. Between sensory issues, trauma, and depression, even showering or brushing your hair can feel impossible. But we live in a world where being clean is expected, so here are some hacks to get by on the tough days:

✨ Body care shortcuts:

Use unscented baby wipes or body wipes (marketed to seniors but great for everyone!). Reusable wipes soaked in witch hazel + almond oil work too.

Take a sink bath—wash key areas with a washcloth, soap, and water. Follow up with lotion and fragrance if you like.

Freshen dirty clothes with fabric refresher + 70% alcohol. Hang them up to reduce wrinkles.

✨ Hair & mouth care:

Mouthwash + finger brush if brushing your teeth feels impossible.

Dry shampoo + detangling brush can hold you over a few days. A beanie hides all.

For 4C hair, try a low-maintenance braided style.

✨ Quick freshen-ups:

Change your undies daily even if you don’t shower. If you have a vagina, boric acid wipes help maintain pH balance.

Full-body deodorant keeps you fresher longer.

✨ Looking put-together with low effort:

Layering + accessories can make “disheveled” look grunge instead of undone.

Most importantly: You matter. Even if you feel guilty or worthless, you have inherent worth. Do what works for you, even if it looks different from others.

Take care of yourself today. You deserve it. 💜

When simple tasks feel overwhelming, implementing hacks tailored to meet your needs is crucial. For body care, using unscented body wipes can make freshness more accessible without the pressure of traditional showering. A ‘sink bath’ is a quick way to cleanse key areas without a full shower. Freshening your clothes with a fabric refresher also revitalizes your mood, making a significant difference in how you carry yourself each day. In terms of hair and mouth care, dry shampoo is a lifesaver. It allows for some grace days, keeping your hair looking presentable without the need for water. A finger brush in combination with mouthwash serves as a practical alternative if brushing teeth feels cumbersome. Keeping up with mental health includes recognizing your self-worth. You deserve to feel clean and confident, even on the days you struggle. Finding your rhythm, no matter how different it may look from others, matters deeply. Remember, mental health is just as important as physical hygiene, and it is okay to seek or share support whenever needed. Don't hesitate to explore additional resources that can aid in your journey.
