🪀PICK UP Y’ALL TOYS! 🧸

#lemon8diarychallenge

Aiight, I’m a mommy of 3. Two boys and one girl. They are three apart. A 10 year old, a 7 year old and a 4 year old.

TOYS everywhere! I step on them, I kick them to the side, I pick them up, I toss them, I tell them to pick them up, I throw them.

I have never thought about this idea. This is something I am def going to try because.

Let me know how your household works when it comes to your little ones with toys.

... Read moreOkay, fellow parents, let's talk about those magnificent creations our kids spend hours on – like those incredible train playtends! My boys (10 and 7) love building elaborate train tracks that snake across the entire living room. It's fantastic to see their creativity, but when playtime is over, it often feels like a miniature city has been abandoned, leaving parts everywhere. I totally get the appeal of building these intricate worlds, but the cleanup afterwards? That's where the real challenge begins, right? I used to dread the end of playtime, especially with smaller, countless pieces typical of train sets or building blocks. It’s not just about stepping on them (ouch!), but also the sheer volume of toys that can accumulate. My 'toy jail' system, which I'm so excited to share, has been a lifesaver for tackling this specific kind of clutter. Imagine a designated 'holding cell' – a clear plastic container, just like the one in the picture – for any toy that gets left out. For my kids, especially my 4-year-old, if a train car or a track piece isn't put away, it goes directly to toy jail. The beauty of this system lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. We have a little 'poem' (you can write your own or just state the rule clearly) that explains the terms of release: 'Toys left out will be held until a chore is completed.' This isn't about punishment; it's about teaching responsibility and the value of tidiness. For my 10-year-old, whose train tracks can be quite complex, releasing a toy might mean helping with dinner prep or making his bed without being asked. For my 7-year-old, it could be putting away his clean laundry. Even my 4-year-old understands that if his favorite doll is in toy jail, he needs to help put away other toys or clear his plate after a meal. What I've found is that this method not only cleans up the mess but also fosters a sense of ownership over their belongings. They quickly learn that if they want access to all their train building supplies or their beloved playtend figures, they need to be proactive about cleanup. It’s less 'Mommy nagging' and more 'natural consequence.' Plus, it saves me from the endless cycle of picking up every single piece myself. Before this, I felt like a human vacuum cleaner after every play session involving their train building kits. For those of you with dedicated train play areas or extensive building block collections, I've got a few extra tips that work well alongside the 'toy jail.' Consider investing in large, easily accessible storage bins specifically for these sets. We use clear bins so the kids can see what's inside, making retrieval and put-away much simpler. A designated play mat or even a specific corner for 'building a train playtend' can help contain the mess to a smaller area, making cleanup less daunting. When the play area is clearly defined, it's easier for kids to understand where things belong and where they should be tidied. Using a 'toy jail' has transformed our home from a constant battleground of scattered toys into a much calmer, more organized space. It truly empowers the kids to manage their things, whether it's a simple toy truck or an entire train playtend they've constructed. It’s a bit of tough love, but the long-term benefits of teaching responsibility are invaluable. Give it a try, and let me know how it works for your family!
