STILL NOT SURE WHAT I’M DOING AS A COLLEGE SENIOR
I’m sharing my struggles as a soon to be college senior because I know I’m not alone in these issues, yet the internet makes it seem that way.
All my life I was set on becoming an orthodontist. So, that’s exactly what I started going for as a college freshman. I unfortunately went to a school that was close to home because my mom and boyfriend wanted me to, but I ended up hating it there. I should have picked the college that was best for me, but I know that everything happens for a reason.
Since I hated my school, I made the decision to drop out and pursue a different career path. This brought me to study sonography at a community college. I really love this school and have met amazing people here, but the program itself isn’t exactly what I expected.
I was accepted into the pre-program, which means I take my GenEds while I wait to be accepted into the actual sonography program. I thought that this would take a year or two max… but I was very wrong. I’m now done with my third year of college and am still on the programs waitlist.
Since there is such a demand for sonographers right now, there are over 100 applicants each year with clinical site room for only 15. I’m now about to enter a gap year and there’s still no guarantee that I’ll get in for the following year after.
I’m really stressed about this and stuck on what to do. In a way, I’ve felt like a failure and that I’m falling behind. However, when I talk to other people I realize that I’m not alone in this. There are so many other people I meet that are my age and stuck on their path as well.
I wanted to share this journey with others so that they know that as long as they’re working towards their future, it doesn’t matter what that journey looks like. You aren’t behind even if it feels like you are. I try to always remember that everything happens for a reason and that this gap year for me might open doors I never expected.
Additionally, I’d love to hear why you’re going for your degree and what your goals are once you graduate! 👩🏼🎓 I’m hoping it gives me and others inspiration through this stressful time!

As someone navigating the complexities of college life, I understand the weight of feeling lost or behind. Many college seniors grapple with uncertainty about their career paths, especially as they transition through various majors. The pressure to find a fulfilling direction can be overwhelming, particularly when faced with long waitlists for popular programs like sonography. It’s crucial to acknowledge that taking a gap year or switching paths is a valid part of the learning journey. This period allows for personal growth and helps clarify one's aspirations. Students should embrace the uncertainty, knowing they’re not alone in their struggles. Engaging in conversations with peers can provide not just support, but also ideas for alternative pathways that align better with one's passions. Moreover, using this time for internships or volunteer work can open unexpected doors, leading to new interests and opportunities that were previously unconsidered. Building a network in your field of interest can also be beneficial, providing insights and connections that may help when it comes time to apply for positions or programs. Remember, every journey is unique, and taking time to explore can lead to a fulfilling career that resonates with your passions. Lastly, fostering a supportive community where students share their goals and experiences can create an uplifting atmosphere that inspires resilience and motivation during moments of doubt.

I’m pursuing a ABSN program to get my BSN after first getting my BS in psychology. I currently work as a behavioral tech on a psychiatric floor and I love! Hoping that it leads to a position as a Psych nurse either PRN or FT. Still looking into the OR or PEDS as well
