Lick Mats vs. Border Collies

Like many of you, I jumped on the lick mat bandwagon, especially after hearing how great they are for calming active pups. My Border Collie, Melo, is a bundle of energy, so I thought a lick mat filled with tasty banana yogurt would be the perfect mental enrichment. And for about 10-15 minutes, it absolutely was! He was focused, happy, and quiet. But then, just like the image shows, that 'worth the hype?' question really hit home when my beautiful, light blue lick mat became a battleground – severely damaged and torn apart. Despite Melo's 'enthusiasm,' I still believe lick mats are fantastic tools for canine enrichment. They tap into a dog's natural licking behavior, which is incredibly soothing and can help reduce anxiety. Plus, they make mealtime or treat time last longer. When it comes to popular and healthy fillings, banana and plain, unsweetened yogurt are a power duo. Bananas are packed with potassium and vitamins, and yogurt offers probiotics for gut health. Just make sure the yogurt is plain and free from xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. My go-to method is usually to mash a ripe banana with a spoonful or two of plain yogurt, spread it thinly across the mat, and sometimes pop it in the freezer for an extra challenge, which also extends the licking duration. Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room – or in my case, the chewed-up mat. This highlights a crucial point: not all lick mats are created equal, and not all dogs are gentle lickers. Border Collies, with their intelligence and high drive, can quickly turn a passive licking activity into an active chewing session if not supervised or if the mat isn't robust enough. The vulnerability to a destructive dog is real, and it's something I wish I'd considered more upfront. For dogs like Melo, who are prone to mischief, conventional silicone mats might not always stand up to the challenge. So, what's an owner of an energetic chewer to do? Firstly, supervision is key. Once your dog is done licking, remove the mat immediately. Don't leave them unattended with it, especially if you know they have a destructive streak. Secondly, consider the material. Some brands offer more durable, thicker silicone or even chew-resistant rubber options. While my light blue mat didn't last, there are tougher alternatives out there. Freezing the mat with its contents can also extend its life and the licking duration, giving less opportunity for chewing. Lastly, remember that a lick mat is just one tool in your enrichment arsenal. For high-energy breeds, combining it with puzzle toys, snuffle mats, or interactive feeders can offer varied mental stimulation without solely relying on a potentially destructible item. My journey with Melo and his lick mats has been a learning curve, proving that even the most beneficial products need to be chosen and used wisely when you have a determined Border Collie on your hands!
