Hot Takes on parenting pre-teens

I have an 18 yr and a 12 yr. I parent each child different. The 18 yr is a girl and the 12 yr is a boy. I have parental blockers on his phone where he can only go to certain websites and download certain apps! I didn’t at first bc I didn’t have to with his sister but his friends introduced him to a certain app that was awful and I quickly locked the phone down. I had to explain to him how dangerous it is talking to random people on apps. #momhottakes #lemon8challenge

Many parents find that what works for a teenage daughter doesn’t always apply to a son, and vice versa, particularly when it comes to managing screen time and internet usage. Implementing parental controls can be a lifesaver for keeping pre-teens safe online. Features like app restrictions, website filters, and timed usage limits help create a safer digital environment. It’s also important to explain why these restrictions are in place—not just as rules, but as tools to protect your child from potential harm such as inappropriate content or interacting with strangers online. Communication is key. When discussing online dangers, use real-world examples to illustrate risks, such as how strangers on apps can pose serious threats. Encouraging open dialogue allows children to feel comfortable sharing their experiences or concerns. Additionally, recognizing the social influences from peers is critical. Pre-teens are especially susceptible to trying new apps or platforms that friends are using, some of which may not be safe. Staying actively involved by monitoring apps and platforms your child uses, while teaching them how to use technology responsibly, helps build trust and safety. Balancing technology with offline activities is just as important. Encourage hobbies, family time, and outdoor play to foster well-rounded development. Overall, tailored parenting approaches, combining technology management and open conversations, empower parents to safeguard their children while nurturing independence during the pre-teen years.
