... Read moreCleaning out a messy closet can feel like an overwhelming task, especially when you're dealing with ADHD or just a busy life. I totally get it! My closet often feels like a never-ending battle, but I've learned a few tricks to make the process more manageable and even a bit fun (yes, really!). It's all about breaking it down and tackling those tricky spots, like the laundry pile that seems to multiply overnight.
Speaking of laundry, have you ever pulled clothes out of the washing machine only to find black flakes all over them? It's incredibly frustrating, and trust me, you're not alone! These flakes are usually a sign of mold, mildew, or detergent buildup inside your washing machine, especially in parts you can't easily see, like the dispenser or beneath the agitator. To get rid of them and prevent them from coming back, I recommend a deep clean. First, run an empty hot water cycle with two cups of white vinegar. After that, sprinkle a cup of baking soda directly into the drum and run another hot cycle. For stubborn buildup, you might need a specialized washing machine cleaner. Afterwards, always leave the washing machine door slightly ajar so it can air dry, preventing moisture buildup that mold loves. Using the correct amount of detergent for your load size also helps prevent residue. This little routine has saved so many of my clean clothes from getting re-dirty!
Now, back to the closet itself. When I'm feeling truly overwhelmed, I try to approach organization almost like a game, just like you might design a fun space in a virtual world. Instead of seeing a huge, insurmountable task, I focus on creating 'zones' or 'levels' within my closet. It makes the process less daunting and more visually engaging. First step: the dirty clothes. I tackle that pile on the floor first, separating laundry and items that need to be put away. Clearing the floor instantly makes the space feel bigger and less chaotic. Then, I move on to decluttering. I pull everything out, category by category – like all my tops, then all my pants. This helps me see exactly what I have (and what I don't need!).
Once everything is out, it's time for a good sweep! Getting rid of dust bunnies and stray lint makes such a difference in how clean the 'new' space feels. Then, I start putting things back in a more organized way. For all those hanging clothes, I try to use consistent hangers; it makes the closet look so much tidier. I also use drawer dividers for smaller items like socks and underwear and clear bins for accessories. This way, everything has a designated 'home,' and it's easy to see at a glance where things are. The goal is to create an organized closet that's not just functional but also visually appealing and easy to maintain, almost like a beautifully designed room in a game. It's a journey, not a one-time fix, but the feeling of having a clean and tidy space is incredibly rewarding and totally worth the effort!
