... Read moreOkay, so you saw my initial rave about Guadalajara, but I have to dive deeper into why this city truly blew me away, especially when it comes to food! If you're wondering 'which cities have the best Mexican food?', Guadalajara is absolutely in the running, if not topping the list for me.
Jalisco, the state Guadalajara is in, is famous for so many iconic Mexican dishes. Forget everything you thought you knew about Mexican cuisine; here, it's an art form. My taste buds were in heaven from day one.
First off, you must try the birria. It's a rich, savory stew, usually goat or lamb, slow-cooked to perfection. I had it from a tiny street stall and it was life-changing. Speaking of street food, the vibrancy of the streets here means incredible options are everywhere. You can find everything from delicious tacos to those refreshing fruit cups with chili powder and lime – a typical street food experience I highly recommend! And then there's tortas ahogadas, the 'drowned sandwiches.' Sounds wild, right? It's a crusty roll filled with pork, then drenched in a spicy tomato sauce. It's messy, it's bold, and it's uniquely Guadalajaran. I tried one near an ornate church entrance I was admiring, and it was the perfect fuel for more exploring.
Beyond the classics, the culinary scene here is so diverse. I even tried a mole dish that was exquisitely rich and complex, generously topped with sesame seeds and vibrant pickled red onions. It was a true masterpiece and showed just how much artistry goes into their cooking. But Guadalajara isn't just about the food. The city itself is a feast for the eyes. Wandering through the historic center, you'll see stunning architecture and experience a truly vibrant street scene. The markets are full of incredible local crafts and unique local art – I spotted some amazing lion statues and intricate wall decor that just added to the city's charm.
Every corner turned offered something new, whether it was a bustling plaza or a serene indoor courtyard, perfect for sipping on some local tequila (another Jalisco specialty, of course!). What I loved most was how food is woven into the fabric of daily life here. It's not just sustenance; it's a celebration, a way to connect. From the bustling Mercado Libertad, where every vendor offers a taste of something incredible, to the more upscale dining experiences that showcase modern Mexican cuisine, there’s something for every palate and budget. Don't be afraid to try everything – even the seemingly simple things like fresh fruit with chili or a traditional elote (corn on the cob) from a street vendor are bursting with flavor.
And let’s not forget the drinks! Beyond the world-famous tequila — which you absolutely must experience in its birthplace, perhaps with a tasting tour — don’t miss out on refreshing aguas frescas or a local craft beer. The combination of incredible food, welcoming people, and the lively atmosphere makes Guadalajara an absolute must-visit for any food lover. It truly cemented my belief that Jalisco is home to some of the best Mexican cuisine you'll ever find. My birthday trip was a gift that kept on giving, bite after delicious bite!
