Nothing beats hot pot at home in this chilly weather
Hot pot is one of my favorite ways to warm up during chilly weather—there’s something so comforting about a bubbling pot of broth filled with fresh ingredients that you can cook right at the table. I’ve found that hosting a hot pot meal at home not only brings everyone together but also allows you to customize the broth and ingredients exactly how you like. I often prepare a classic shabu shabu style hot pot, using a light kombu (seaweed) broth as a base. It’s perfect for dipping thinly sliced meats, like beef or pork, along with leafy greens, mushrooms, tofu, and noodles. The experience becomes interactive because everyone cooks their food to their preferred doneness. I also like to experiment with different broth flavors—spicy, savory, or even slightly sweet—to match the mood and occasion. For a special touch during colder days, adding herbs and spices helps to boost the warmth and aroma of the pot. Starting with store-bought broth concentrates can save time, but homemade broth with simple ingredients gives the best flavor. One important tip is to prepare all your ingredients in small, bite-sized pieces before starting. This way, cooking and eating can happen seamlessly without any delays. Setting up dipping sauces, such as a mix of soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and chili flakes, elevates the flavor and adds variety. For me, the best part is the cozy atmosphere that hot pot creates at home, especially when shared with family or friends. It’s not just a meal but an experience that warms both body and soul. If you haven’t tried a shabushabu or hot pot night at home yet, I highly recommend starting—it’s perfect for turning any chilly weather into a delightful gathering.
