Things children need to build independence

Things children need to build independence

1) Trust:

Children need to be able to make plenty of choices for themselves and they should be believed when they tell you things.

2) Boredom:

Obviously we shouldn't let kids be bored all of the time, but they also need some amount of boredom to foster creativity and independence.

This is actually a lot of why I think screen time needs to be limited, kids need time alone with their toys to just play.

3) To be taught critical thinking skills and insight:

Actually taking the time to explain why things are right and wrong instead of just punishing, giving children time to figure things out on their own instead of helping immediately, and encouraging kids to have their own opinions are integral to developing critical thinking skills and insight.

4) To be supported and to get attention:

If you never support a kids decisions, how will they learn to make decisions? And kids need attention in general for proper mental development.

I know that kids, particularly toddlers, going through their "independent" phase can be really frustrating because it slows us down so much, but it's SO important to support this independence so they can grow up to be independent older kids/teens/adults.

Slowing down, going the child's speed, and letting them do it themselves are all things that are very good for both the child and for us. It also makes parenting easier later because it teaches real independence.

... Read moreFrom my experience raising children, fostering independence is truly a gradual and intentional process. One important thing I've learned is that allowing kids some control over their choices builds confidence and decision-making skills early on. When children feel trusted to make decisions, whether simple or complex, they start owning their actions more responsibly. Another insight I gained is about boredom—not the enemy but a valuable space for kids to develop creativity and problem-solving. Too much screen time often fills every idle moment, but giving children unstructured time with their toys or activities lets their imagination run wild. This balance between guided play and free play encourages children to entertain themselves and become more resourceful. Critical thinking skills were another focus in my parenting journey. Instead of immediately stepping in to correct or punish, I found it more effective to explain reasons behind rules and encourage children to think about consequences. Sometimes, stepping back and letting children figure out solutions independently, even if it takes longer, helps them grasp cause and effect better. Lastly, emotional support and attention remain crucial. I noticed that children whose decisions were consistently supported felt more secure in their judgments. Providing attention doesn’t just mean supervision but actively listening and valuing their opinions, which further reinforces independence. Slowing down to match their pace may be challenging at times, especially when toddlers passionately assert their independence, but it pays off immensely. This approach nurtures genuinely independent kids who grow into teens and adults capable of handling life's demands confidently, making the parenting journey smoother over time.

Little boys don’t need to be “masculine”
As a mom of boys I hate the idea that boys can’t do or like certain things because we as a society has said so. I let my boy like what they like, and try what they’re interested in. I’m not saying boys don’t need to be masculine at all, I just don’t think we need to not put so much pressure on boys
