Dangerous baby products

Dangerous baby/toddler products you shouldn't get or should only use while watching closely.

Keep updated on recalls at https://www.cpsc.gov/N ewsroom/Subscribe

Amber teething necklaces:

They don't work and are huge choking hazard. have k*lled babies.

Baby floats and water wings:

These should ONLY be used if you are still actively holding the child and watching them closly.

Baby floats can quickly and quietly flip and water wings won't keep your kids head out of the water. Many kids have d*ed from parents trusting these items.

Crib bumpers and baby sleep positioners:

Both are huge suffocation risks, sleep positioners are also an asphyxiation risk, and both have k*lled babies.

Any additions to car seats that aren't by the company that made the carseat and for that carseat:

This includes things like head positioners, under car seat seat protectors, or carseat protectors/liners for potty training.

They aren't crash tested, so they aren't guaranteed to be safe. Many car seat manufacturers specifically say not to use these things.

... Read moreWhen I first became a parent, I found the safety warnings around baby products overwhelming. However, experience quickly taught me how crucial it is to carefully select and monitor the items our little ones interact with. For example, amber teething necklaces, though popular on social media, are widely documented as a serious choking hazard and ineffective for teething relief. Seeing firsthand how quickly a child’s environment can turn unsafe has made me vigilant about avoiding these. Similarly, baby floats and water wings can give parents a false sense of security during water play. I once trusted a baby float in a shallow pool, thinking it would keep my toddler safe, only to learn that such floats can easily tip over silently, creating dangerous situations. To this day, I only allow water activities with direct physical supervision, never relying solely on these devices. Crib bumpers and sleep positioners are other products I avoided after reading multiple safety alerts that highlighted their association with suffocation risks and tragic infant deaths. Instead, we used a bare crib with a firm mattress and fitted sheets, which is a safer sleeping environment recommended by pediatric experts. One essential lesson is to never use unauthorized add-ons to car seats, such as aftermarket head positioners or liners. These products are not crash-tested and can compromise the safety features of the seat, potentially causing harm during an accident. I always use only the accessories provided or approved by the car seat manufacturer and regularly check for recalls or safety updates via official resources like the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Staying informed is key. I subscribe to safety newsletters and recall updates to make sure I don't miss any alerts about hazardous baby products. It’s also important to critically evaluate new products and trends rather than relying on marketing claims or peer advice. By sharing my experiences, I hope other parents realize that safety often means simplicity and caution with baby products. Always prioritize supervision and trusted gear to create the safest environment for your child.
