We call it “Novemberuary”
Does anyone at work actually have their full game on? My team coined the term “Novemberuary” and it’s so accurate. We’re basically in a low effort zone from early November all the way through February.
Between holiday planning, post-Thanksgiving food comas, and counting down to Christmas (then New Year’s, then just waiting for winter to end), focusing on spreadsheets feels impossible. We’re still getting work done but there’s a vibe of “let’s just get through this” that’s hard to shake. Emails take longer to answer, meetings feel extra draggy, and half the time we’re bonding over how we’re all secretly daydreaming about vacation.
Is this just my team, or is “Novemberuary” a universal work mood? Do you and your coworkers have a name for this end of year slump? Spill, no judgment, we’re all in this together!
Many people experience a noticeable dip in productivity during the late fall and winter months, a phenomenon that has recently been dubbed "Novemberuary." This term perfectly captures the collective low-energy mood that tends to settle in from early November through February. During this period, employees often feel overwhelmed by the combination of post-Thanksgiving food comas, holiday preparations, and the anticipation of the new year. Consequently, maintaining focus on tasks such as spreadsheets or responding promptly to emails becomes a challenge. It’s not just isolated to one workplace; countless employees globally share this sentiment, which can manifest as sluggishness, daydreaming about upcoming vacations, and a general desire to just get through workdays. The festive season and colder months further contribute to this decline in motivation, making meetings feel longer and work interactions less engaging. Understanding "Novemberuary" helps normalize the experience so employees and managers can better support each other. Strategies such as setting clear end-of-year goals, promoting flexible work hours, and encouraging short breaks can help combat the slump. Recognizing the signs early and fostering open discussions about it, similar to the one initiated with #Letschat and #WorkSlump, can build camaraderie and reduce stress. Ultimately, "Novemberuary" is a reminder that workplace moods are deeply influenced by seasonal and social factors. While it's normal to experience dips in energy, finding small ways to inject focus or joy during these months can make a significant difference in maintaining productivity and morale until the spring resurgence.
