... Read moreFall is truly magical, isn't it? The crisp air, the colorful leaves, and of course, pumpkin patch visits! For years, I struggled to capture that cozy, vibrant autumn feeling in my phone photos. They always looked a bit dull or washed out, especially when I compared them to what I saw online. I wanted that rich, almost 'orange edit overlay' look that just screams fall, but my pictures just weren't cutting it.
But then, I started experimenting more with my iPhone's built-in editing tools, and honestly, it's a game-changer! You don't need fancy apps to get stunning fall pics. That coveted orange edit overlay isn't some secret filter; it's all about tweaking a few key settings. I learned this while trying to make my pumpkin patch photos pop, and now I use it for all my autumn images.
Here's what I personally do to transform my photos from 'meh' to 'marvelous' right on my iPhone:
Exposure: This is crucial. I usually bump it up just a tiny bit (+5 to +10) to brighten the overall image without blowing out the highlights. It gives everything a fresh, airy feel.
Brilliance: Oh, Brilliance! This setting works wonders by making shadows brighter and highlights darker, adding a lovely depth. I usually slide this one up to +15 or +20. It really makes the colors sing.
Highlights: Fall scenes often have bright skies or reflections. I tend to reduce Highlights (-10 to -20) to bring back detail in those brighter areas, especially if you have a bright pumpkin. This prevents them from looking overexposed.
Shadows: This is where the magic happens for that cozy orange edit overlay feel! I increase Shadows (+15 to +25). It deepens the darker tones and often brings out richer, warmer colors in the leaves and pumpkins. It also helps create a softer, more inviting mood.
Contrast: A slight bump in Contrast (+5) can add a bit of punch, but be careful not to overdo it, or your photos might look too harsh.
Warmth: This is key for the autumn vibe. I almost always increase Warmth (+10 to +20) to bring out those beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows. It instantly makes your pic feel cozier.
Saturation: A little extra saturation (+5 to +10) can make colors pop, but again, subtle is better to avoid an unnatural look.
Vibrance: Vibrance is great because it boosts less saturated colors more than already saturated ones, giving a natural-looking color boost. I use it with Saturation (+10 to +15).
Beyond the Settings: Composition & Light
Editing is just one piece of the puzzle. When I'm taking pics in the pumpkin patch, I always try to shoot during the 'golden hour' – that hour after sunrise or before sunset. The soft, warm light at this time is naturally perfect for fall pics. Also, don't be afraid to get creative with your angles! Crouch down low to capture the pumpkins from a unique perspective, or use elements like pathways or fences to create leading lines in your image.
It's been so fun discovering these simple iPhone editing tricks. It's amazing how much difference a few slider adjustments can make. I used to think I needed a professional camera, but now my fall photos taken on my iPhone get so many compliments. Give these tips a try next time you're out enjoying the autumn scenery, and tell me what you think! Happy editing!
Thank you for putting the edits all on one slide and not 10 different slides. 🫶🏼💞
