I always want to answer this question but it’s a lot of explaining! Not all well known programs are free or non-profit but many are. Typically they train dogs to a specific disability or need. An example of this are guide dogs and mobility dogs. An important factor in your decision is, will this dog actually benefit me in my treatment for my disability or will managing a dogs needs, getting a lot of unwanted attention in public, and some pushback in access to uneducated businesses, be too difficult for me? I don’t think this needs to be said but providing emotional support is not a task under the ADA and there are no legal registrations for service dogs. Emotional support dogs, therapy dogs, and service dogs are all different things. ESA’s don’t require training but in my opinion, all dogs should have some structure. Some private trainers / board and train facilities can be very poorly ran and abusive. On the other hand, I know some great trainers. The best pick their clients and don’t say yes to everyone. They know the law WELL and sometimes in other countries. Ask where they’ve worked, references, videos, the entire process into which they train a dog (especially before you invest an arm and a leg). If you are getting help training a dog, do the same but let the trainer help you from the beginning. Some really great trainers know breeders that might suit your needs best and can help you start out with the right puppy prospect. And lastly, not all dogs are meant to be service dogs and that’s OKAY. This is called “washing” a service dog prospect. you need to be prepared for keeping a dog as a pet if it doesn’t work out as a service dog. Training typically and realistically takes 1-2.5 years starting from a puppy depending on the dog and your needs. If you have any other questions, feel free to visit my website at www.embraceeveryday.org and click New Life Working Dogs. There’s a waitlist and I can’t train every dog but I can definitely point you in the right direction and know some wonderful trainers. :) ##servicedog##ServiceDogEducation##ServiceDogTrainer##WorkingDogLife##ServiceDogTeam

... Read moreWhen considering a service dog, it’s important to look beyond just the appeal of having a canine companion. The process starts with assessing your specific disability and determining whether a trained service dog can genuinely assist in your daily life and treatment. Managing a service dog requires significant commitment, patience, and understanding of public access laws and potential social challenges, such as unwanted attention or resistance from some businesses unfamiliar with service dog regulations. From my experience, one of the most overlooked issues is the distinction between service dogs, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy dogs. Service dogs undergo extensive training to perform tasks directly related to a person’s disability, protected under the ADA, while ESAs provide comfort but have no specific training requirements or legal public access rights. Therapy dogs typically offer emotional support in clinical or institutional settings and are not considered service animals. Choosing the right trainer is crucial. It’s not uncommon to encounter privately operated training programs that lack proper oversight, and unfortunately, some may even mistreat dogs. To avoid this, I recommend researching trainers thoroughly: ask about their experience with disability-specific training, their knowledge of legal requirements, request references, and look for video demonstrations of their training methods. A reputable trainer will also help you identify the best dog breed or breeder to meet your needs. Prepare yourself for the reality that not every dog will be suited to service work. This phase, sometimes known as 'washing' a dog, means the dog may be better off as a family pet rather than a working service animal. The training process generally takes between 1 to 2.5 years, so patience and dedication are key. Throughout this journey, stay connected with communities and organizations specializing in service dog training for support and guidance. Many trainers operate waitlists and cannot accept every client, but they can often provide referrals to trusted professionals. Ultimately, owning a service dog is not just about assistance—it’s a partnership that requires mutual respect, ongoing training, and a realistic understanding of the challenges and rewards involved.

want to choose your baby’s birth month?
hello ◡̈ Planning your conception date to align with your desired birth month requires a bit of calculation. To increase your chances of having a baby in a specific month, you'll need to consider the average length of a pregnancy (38-40 weeks) and count backward from your desired birth month.
