I really don’t have words. This is so sad and I really don’t know much about tortoises. After researching and finding out how getting crushed alive in a trash truck would be equivalent to the pain of a skull fracture.. I was just so disgusted in what we found. Local pet stores have told us in the past that they throw away things for pets because they aren’t allowed to donate it and have encouraged us to check. So every once in a while I check to see if there’s donate-able items since our local rescues are always in need. Living animals wasn’t something I expected to find. I didn’t know if I wanted to post this because I’m so disappointed in myself for not crawling in there and looking for more. I just didn’t think about it in the moment.

Finding living animals among discarded pet supplies is deeply troubling, and it highlights a significant issue many animal lovers may not be aware of: some local pet stores, due to regulations, throw away items that could potentially be donated—including living animals in rare cases. This situation exposes a critical gap in animal welfare and rescue operations. From my experience volunteering and visiting rescue centers, the presence of abandoned animals like tortoises can often go unnoticed because people don’t expect living creatures to be among discarded materials. The fact that getting crushed alive in a trash truck inflicts pain comparable to a severe skull fracture underscores the cruelty and urgency of the problem. If you’re moved by stories like this, consider regularly checking with local pet stores about their discard policies and whether they have any items or animals needing help. Volunteering, donating supplies, or fostering can dramatically improve the lives of abandoned tortoises and other animals. Additionally, raising awareness on platforms with hashtags like #TortoiseRescue and #BeTheirVoice can mobilize communities to act, potentially saving many lives. These creatures depend on our voices and actions to prevent neglect and abandonment. In my personal journey, this experience taught me the importance of vigilance and compassion—not just in rescue work but also in holding local businesses accountable. It reminded me that sometimes, taking action swiftly can mean the difference between life and death for an innocent animal. If you ever find yourself in similar circumstances, don’t hesitate to reach out to animal welfare organizations and make a difference.
