STOP SAYING YOU CAN PROCESS IN 50 states! You cant if you DID NOT get your credentials in these states. NEW YORK and CALIFORNIA is about that life, especially if they see more than 10 returns with your info on it without your state number from them! They will charge you accordingly!
California: Requires paid tax preparers to register with the California Tax Education Council (CTEC). This includes initial education hours, a $5,000 surety bond, and annual continuing education. CPAs, attorneys, and enrolled agents are exempt.
Connecticut: Tax preparers who complete more than 10 returns for Connecticut clients must obtain a permit from the Department of Revenue Services. Certain tax professionals, like those participating in the IRS Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP), can have their annual continuing education requirements waived.
Illinois: Requires paid tax preparers to register and enter their PTIN on any returns they prepare. *** the basic PTIN from IRS ONLY.
Maryland: Requires tax preparers to pass a state competency exam and register with the Maryland State Board of Individual Tax Preparers. Annual continuing education is also required.
Nevada: Requires tax preparers to register with the state.
New York: Tax preparers who file more than 10 New York returns annually must register with the state and complete continuing education each year. CPAs and attorneys are exempt.
Oregon: The only state to issue a full license for tax preparation. It requires 80 hours of coursework, a state-administered exam, and ongoing continuing education
