Does the Months November–February Trigger You?

If winter triggers your emetophobia… you’re not alone.

Comment “ME” so others know they’re not the only ones white-knuckling November–February. 💛

One Small Way to Get Through the Season

Create a “Winter Calm Ritual.”

Just 60 seconds can retrain your brain:

• Put one hand on your chest

• One on your stomach

• Breathe out longer than you breathe in

• Tell yourself: “I’m safe. This is a season, not a threat.”

Doing this once a day helps your body stop equating winter with danger.

... Read moreFor many living with emetophobia, the months from November through February can be particularly challenging due to several compounding factors. This period often coincides with the peak season for stomach viruses, such as norovirus, which significantly increases the presence of illness in communities. When norovirus and other stomach bugs surge, people’s awareness of potential sickness heightens, naturally triggering anxiety responses for those sensitive to these threats. Moreover, the constant chatter about illness circulating around this time—from casual conversations like “everyone’s sick right now” to news about outbreaks—can prime the brain's threat response systems even when an individual isn't directly at risk. This heightened nervous system sensitivity is further amplified by the stresses linked to the holiday season, which often include more social gatherings, travel, irregular eating habits, and disrupted sleep cycles. A notable factor affecting mood and anxiety is the reduction in sunlight exposure during these months, leading to lower vitamin D and dopamine levels. This biochemical shift can result in increased physical symptoms of anxiety and depression, making the brain more likely to misinterpret bodily feelings as signs of illness or danger, exacerbating emetophobia symptoms. Importantly, the brain often learns from previous experiences. If someone has faced anxiety or vomiting-related fears during these months before, their brain may automatically predict the worst and prepare the body for perceived threats, even when the risk is not immediate or present. This learned response can create a cycle that perpetuates seasonal anxiety. To cope, establishing a daily "Winter Calm Ritual" can be beneficial. This simple breathing exercise—placing one hand on the chest and one on the stomach, breathing out longer than inhaling, and repeating affirmations such as "I’m safe. This is a season, not a threat."—works by retraining the brain’s association with winter from danger to a manageable timeframe. Practiced consistently, it helps reduce the body's default state of hypervigilance. In addition to this ritual, diversifying coping mechanisms can also improve resilience. Approaches include maintaining a regular sleep schedule, engaging in gentle physical activity to boost mood, seeking social support by connecting with others who understand emetophobia, and limiting exposure to anxiety-inducing conversations or media. Incorporating light therapy lamps may alleviate low sunlight effects, and consulting healthcare professionals regarding vitamin D supplementation could also be helpful. Understanding the specific triggers during the November–February timeframe empowers individuals with emetophobia to anticipate challenges and implement effective strategies. Remember, seasonal anxiety is a valid and common experience, and employing mindful practices can greatly ease the distress associated with these months.
