The nation’s name, meaning "mountainous land," perfectly describes its rugged terrain, with peaks soaring over 8,000 feet—making it a perfect destination for adventurous travelers who appreciate breathtaking coastlines and scenic mountain views. One of my favorite experiences in Haiti was visiting the historic mountaintop fortress on Bonnet à l'Évêque, the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Walking those ancient grounds gave me a tangible sense of the country’s resilience and rich heritage. Haitian cuisine is just as colorful and flavorful, featuring spicy dishes and unique meals like spicy spaghetti for breakfast—a norm many might find surprising yet delicious. Haitians also take pride in their internationally recognized culinary heritage. The UNESCO-recognized giraumont soup, made with turban squash and other local ingredients, offers a taste that can’t be found anywhere else. The country’s cultural impact extends to literature as well; famous novelist Alexandre Dumas Sr., known worldwide for classics like "The Three Musketeers," was of Haitian descent, highlighting Haiti’s influence beyond its borders. Celebrating Haitian Flag Day is a reminder of the nation’s journey from its pioneering abolition of slavery in the Western Hemisphere to its vibrant present-day culture. Whether exploring its scenic coasts like Lover Island or indulging in its spicy traditional cuisine, Haiti’s spirit shines brightly through its flag and its people.
