It is known as a village of simple pottery made by the old-fashioned technique of crushing the soil with a Chinese mortar using the water of Tanigawa River and baking it in a climbing kiln using firewood.
It became famous nationwide after British potter Bernard Leach visited in 1954, and was designated as an important intangible cultural property of Japan in 1995.
In addition, the sound of a karausu grinding clay has been selected as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan," and the entire area has been selected as an important cultural landscape.
私が初めて小鹿田焼の里を訪れたのは、伝統的な陶芸に興味があったからでしたが、実際に訪れてみると陶芸だけでなく、周囲の自然環境や村の静けさにも深く癒されました。小鹿田焼は、昔ながらの唐臼で陶土を砕き、薪を使う登り窯で焼き上げるという伝統技法を守っているため、温かみのある素朴な風合いが魅力的です。 村内に点在する約8件の窯元は、歩いて約1時間で見て回れる距離にあり、それぞれの窯元で異なる色合いや模様の焼き物を見ることができます。窯元から聞こえてくる唐臼の穏やかな音はまるで自然のBGMのようで、訪れる人の心を落ち着かせてくれます。この音は「日本の音風景100選」にも選ばれていることからも、地 域の文化的価値の高さを実感できます。 また、小鹿田焼の里は国の重要無形文化財に指定されており、地域全体が重要文化的景観として保護されています。陶芸だけでなく伝統文化に興味がある方にとって、学びの多い場所と言えるでしょう。お近くには小石原焼きの産地もあるので、陶芸好きならぜひ両方を訪れるドライブがおすすめです。 私自身、ゆったりとした時間の中で村の散策を楽しみながら、お気に入りの焼き物をいくつか購入しました。使い込むほどに味わいが増すので、日常生活でも手作りの温かみを感じられるのが嬉しいです。九州旅行やドライブ趣味をお持ちの方は、ぜひ小鹿田焼の里を旅程に入れて、充実した癒しの一日を体験してみてください。
