Helping Others Has Always Been My Why

As a kid, I was always sick, doctor visit after doctor visit.

I loved being curious, sneaking peeks at my aunt's medical books because I thought the baby pics were cute, and slowly as I grew I became fascinated by the human body.

My pediatrician has an almost impossible case with me, but thanks to his care, he discovered my allergies and bronchial spasms. Those visits weren't easy for my parents...or me; but they shaped my path.

By 5th grade, I was translating medical explanations for my parents during hospital visits, and somehow it felt calm, not scary. That curiosity only grew as I explored the human body through music, epidemiology, and research.

My path wasn't straight, from marketing to pre-med but every twist reminded me why I want to help people. Now, I want to be a pediatrician: to make kids healthier, happier, and less scared at the doctor's visit.

Helping others has always been my why, so here's your reflection question of the day:

What's your why? 💭

... Read moreGrowing up with chronic health challenges often means countless appointments, tests, and uncertainties, yet these experiences can also inspire profound empathy and determination. This personal story highlights how early exposure to medicine and patient care shaped a lifelong passion for helping others. It’s especially touching how the author’s pediatrician, despite facing complex cases like allergies and bronchial spasms, provided compassionate care that transformed intimidating medical visits into moments of calm. As the author’s curiosity blossomed through engagements with medical literature and translating complex explanations for their family, it speaks volumes about the importance of clear communication in healthcare. This skill not only bridges gaps for patients and families but also nurtures a deeper understanding and comfort within challenging situations. Interestingly, the path to a medical career is not always linear — the journey from marketing to pre-med exemplifies how varied experiences can reinforce one’s 'why'. This reinforces the principle that every twist and turn adds valuable perspective, enriching the ability to connect with patients on a personal level. For those considering a career in pediatrics or any healthcare field, the author’s story underscores the power of motivation rooted in helping others. Pediatricians play a critical role in making children’s healthcare experiences less daunting, which can promote better long-term health outcomes. The author’s commitment to making doctor visits smoother and more positive reflects a compassionate approach that is much needed in medicine. This narrative invites all readers to reflect on their own "why" — their fundamental motivation to pursue certain paths or goals. Understanding this personal 'why' can provide resilience and clarity, especially when facing challenges. Whether your passion lies in healthcare, education, or any other field, finding that deeper purpose can inspire authentic, impactful work. In sum, the combination of personal health battles, maternal support, a dedicated pediatrician, and evolving interests illustrates the profound impact early life experiences have on career ambitions. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness and determination in fostering healing and hope for others.

When helping others Means ignoring yourself
Sometimes we say yes because we care. Sometimes we say yes because we don't want to disappoint someone. And sometimes we say yes so often that we forget to ask ourselves what we need. The challenge isn't kindness. The challenge is when our own needs, boundaries, and well-being get pushed
