Repotting my plants🌱

Some of my plants were ready for a bigger pot so today I decided to go for it! I was a little nervous because so far everything has gone pretty well but it was easy and now my plants are thriving. All I did was put a little layer of dirt in the bottom of the new pot, add my plant, fill the space around with soil, and water! I was able to repot my pepper plant as well after cleaning the container my basil was in! What’s growing in your garden?

... Read moreHey plant friends! I recently tackled repotting some of my favorite plants, including my basil and other young seedlings, and I wanted to share my experience and tips with you. It can feel a bit daunting, especially when you see those little roots growing out of the drainage holes, but trust me, it’s a game-changer for plant health! Why and When to Repot Your Plants First, let's talk about why repotting is so important. Plants, just like us, need room to grow! When a plant becomes 'root-bound,' meaning its roots have filled the entire pot, it struggles to absorb enough water and nutrients. This can lead to stunted growth, wilting, and overall unhappy plants. The most common sign it’s time to repot is seeing roots peeking out of the drainage holes at the bottom of your pot. Other clues include your plant drying out much faster than usual, or if its growth has slowed significantly. For seedlings, I usually aim to repot them once they have developed at least two sets of true leaves and look sturdy enough to handle the move. My pepper plant was definitely showing these signs! Gather Your Repotting Essentials Before you start, make sure you have everything you need. This usually includes new, slightly larger pots (I typically go for pots that are 1-2 inches wider in diameter for most plants), fresh organic potting mix (this is key for providing new nutrients!), and a small trowel or spoon. Having a watering can nearby is also essential for the final step. I always make sure my empty pots are clean and ready to go. My Simple Step-by-Step Repotting Process Prepare the New Pot: Start by adding a fresh layer of organic potting mix to the bottom of your new, larger pot. This gives your plant a soft landing and keeps it at the right soil level. Ensure your new pot has good drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Gently Remove the Plant: Carefully tip the old pot on its side, or even upside down if the plant is sturdy. Gently hold the base of the plant with one hand and tap the bottom of the pot with your other hand. Avoid pulling the plant by its stem. You want to ease it out, trying to keep the root ball as intact as possible. If the roots are tightly wound, you can gently loosen them a bit with your fingers, but be careful not to damage them. Position and Fill: Place your plant in the center of the new pot, making sure the top of the root ball is about an inch below the rim of the pot. This leaves room for watering. Then, fill the space around the root ball with more fresh potting mix. Gently pat the soil down to remove any large air pockets, but avoid compacting it too tightly, as roots need air. Water Thoroughly: Once your plant is snugly in its new home, give it a good, deep watering until water starts to drain from the bottom. This helps settle the soil and provides a much-needed drink for your plant after the transplant. Aftercare for Thriving Plants After repotting, place your plant in a spot where it can recover without too much stress. For the first week or so, avoid direct, harsh sunlight. Keep an eye on the soil moisture, watering when the top inch or two feels dry. I've found that my basil and other seedlings really appreciate this fresh start, and within a few days, they were already looking so much happier and ready for continued growth in their new larger pots. Happy repotting!
