This Reading Habit Changed Everything

📚 Okay, real talk about reading

I used to speed through books like it was a competition lol. Highlighting everything, feeling super accomplished... then a week later I literally couldn't remember anything I just read 🤦‍♀️ That's when it hit me - I wasn't actually learning, I was just... consuming? Now I actually slow down and think about what I'm reading instead of just racing to the end.

🧠 Your brain isn't Google Drive

I genuinely thought if I just read something carefully enough, it would magically stick in my head forever. Spoiler alert: it doesn't work that way! Now I try to connect everything I read to something I already know or some random memory. Like, I'll read about productivity and think "oh this is like that time I procrastinated on my essay for 3 weeks" 😅 Sounds weird but it actually works??

✍️ This 5-second thing is a game changer

So I found this trick where after reading a paragraph or section, you literally just stop for 5 seconds and jot down ONE thing. Could be a summary, a question, or even just "wait what??" It feels awkward at first but now my brain actually processes stuff instead of just... existing while my eyes move across words.

🧰 Tools that don't suck

Used to bookmark everything thinking "I'll definitely come back to this" (narrator: she never came back). Now I actually use Notion for big picture stuff, Google Sheets to organize ideas, and Anki for the things I keep forgetting. They're like having a second brain that actually remembers things for you.

Anyone else struggle with this or is it just me? 👀

Many people mistakenly believe that reading more means better retention; however, our brains process information differently than machines. To retain knowledge, it's vital to engage with the material through various techniques. One such technique is the 5-second rule, where readers pause to summarize or question what they've just read. This not only reinforces memory retention but also creates a personal connection to the material. Additionally, utilizing digital tools like Notion and Anki can help organize thoughts and reinforce learning over time. These tools act as your 'second brain,' aiding in memory recall and organization, which is crucial for long-term retention. Moreover, interacting with content can include discussing insights with others or applying concepts through real-life examples, making the learning experience holistically enriching. Whether you're reading fiction or non-fiction, these strategies can be adapted to maximize retention. Embrace the journey of learning through reading innovatively and thoughtfully!
