This One Idea Made Me Braver (Not Just Productive)

What is “Misogi”?

I came across the idea of Misogi a year ago, and it’s stuck with me ever since. It’s simple, but intense: once a year, do something that genuinely scares you. Something so hard, you're not even sure you can finish it. It’s not about being productive. It’s not for your resume or to impress anyone. It’s just for you, to wake yourself up. ⚡

My First Misogi

My first Misogi was a 12-hour solo hike in the mountains, no phone signal, no music, no one to hype me up. I panicked halfway through. Every part of me wanted to turn around. But finishing it gave me a kind of confidence I hadn’t felt in years.

It didn’t just test my body, it cleared my mind. I came back feeling alive, capable, and more grounded than any productivity hack had ever made me feel.

Why I Keep Doing It

Now, I plan one Misogi a year. It’s different every time, sometimes it’s physical, like that hike. Other times, it’s mental, like quitting social media cold turkey or doing 30 days of public speaking practice.

Whatever it is, it’s always something that pushes me way outside my comfort zone. I’ve found it more powerful than journaling, planning, or even therapy sometimes. It’s my reset button.

What Misogi Looks Like for Me Now

This summer, my Misogi is learning to surf, alone, in a city where I don’t know a single person. 🌊 I’m awkward, uncoordinated, and honestly a little terrified of open water.

But that’s exactly why I’m doing it. Misogi isn’t about mastering the skill, it’s about proving to yourself that you can show up, even when you’re scared. 💥

... Read moreThe practice of Misogi encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones and confront fears head-on. This year-long challenge, rooted in ancient Japanese tradition, focuses on personal growth rather than productivity. Activities could range from physical extreme challenges like long solo hikes to mental feats like public speaking or taking a break from social media. Each Misogi experience acts as a reset button, allowing participants to reflect on their capabilities, resilience, and mindset. This approach can foster confidence, clarity, and a sense of achievement, helping individuals realize their potential beyond conventional life metrics. Engaging in such challenges can lead to profound mental and emotional benefits. The act of facing fears cultivates courage and tenacity, making us more adaptable to life's unpredictabilities. Furthermore, adventures such as learning to surf, as mentioned in the article, can serve as metaphors for tackling life's uncertainties. It's about showing up and trying, regardless of the outcome. In today's fast-paced world, where productivity often overshadows personal well-being, adopting the philosophy behind Misogi can offer a refreshing perspective. It’s not about proving yourself to others, but about reconnecting with your authentic self and embracing the journey of self-discovery. So, consider what your Misogi could look like this year and challenge yourself to grow! Engaging in Misogi also builds a community of like-minded individuals who share their experiences, fostering mutual encouragement and support. Whether it's through social media or local meet-ups, sharing these intimate challenges can motivate others to embark on their Misogi journey. After all, real growth often comes from vulnerability and connection. Start planning your own Misogi today, and inspire others along the way!
