This One Idea Made Me Braver (Not Just Productive)
What is “Misogi”?
I came across the idea of Misogi a year ago, and it’s stuck with me ever since. It’s simple, but intense: once a year, do something that genuinely scares you. Something so hard, you're not even sure you can finish it. It’s not about being productive. It’s not for your resume or to impress anyone. It’s just for you, to wake yourself up. ⚡
My First Misogi
My first Misogi was a 12-hour solo hike in the mountains, no phone signal, no music, no one to hype me up. I panicked halfway through. Every part of me wanted to turn around. But finishing it gave me a kind of confidence I hadn’t felt in years.
It didn’t just test my body, it cleared my mind. I came back feeling alive, capable, and more grounded than any productivity hack had ever made me feel.
Why I Keep Doing It
Now, I plan one Misogi a year. It’s different every time, sometimes it’s physical, like that hike. Other times, it’s mental, like quitting social media cold turkey or doing 30 days of public speaking practice.
Whatever it is, it’s always something that pushes me way outside my comfort zone. I’ve found it more powerful than journaling, planning, or even therapy sometimes. It’s my reset button.
What Misogi Looks Like for Me Now
This summer, my Misogi is learning to surf, alone, in a city where I don’t know a single person. 🌊 I’m awkward, uncoordinated, and honestly a little terrified of open water.
But that’s exactly why I’m doing it. Misogi isn’t about mastering the skill, it’s about proving to yourself that you can show up, even when you’re scared. 💥
