Landlord issue in NY

So I just renewed my one-bedroom lease last month, and now my landlord says he wants to move me and my wife into a motel for a few weeks while he “completely renovates” our unit new floors, kitchen, bathroom, the works.

Here’s the catch: once it’s done, he plans to raise the rent. I’m not comfortable living out of a motel, and I don’t see why we should pay more after signing a lease. The place might need updates, but we agreed to the apartment as-is.

Can I actually say no to this? And if we do agree, what should we ask for rent reduction, guaranteed return, or something in writing?

Anyone in NY been through something like this?
