If I’m going to pay extra for a room upgrade at Disney World, Preferred is one I’ll actually consider.
Not because the room itself is necessarily any nicer.
You’re paying for location.
Depending on the resort, a Preferred room can put you closer to things like the main building, dining, transportation, or other amenities you’ll use throughout your stay.
And after walking miles in the parks all day, those extra few minutes you DON’T have to walk back to your room can feel pretty valuable. 😂
Would I pay extra for Preferred every time? No.
But depending on the resort, the price difference and how we plan to use the resort, it can absolutely be worth considering.
This is also why I compare more than just the cheapest room when I quote a Disney vacation. I can look at different room categories, promotions, and pricing to help you decide where it’s worth spending a little more and where it isn’t.

When planning a Disney World trip, considering a Preferred room upgrade isn't just about getting a nicer room—it’s primarily about location convenience. From my experience visiting multiple Disney resorts, having a room closer to the main building, dining options, and transportation can significantly enhance your stay. After a long day navigating the parks, which easily involves miles of walking, those extra minutes saved walking back to your hotel room can mean more time to relax and recharge. This convenience really adds to the value of a Preferred room, especially if you have young children or seniors in your group who might find long walks exhausting. However, the price difference can vary greatly between resorts, so it’s important to assess your itinerary and how often you plan to return to your room during the day. If your plan involves spending most of the time in the parks or at dining experiences, and minimal time resting at the hotel, opting for a standard room might be more cost-effective. I've also found that when comparing room options, it helps to look at ongoing promotions and deals Disney offers, which can sometimes make an upgrade more affordable or add extra perks. Since Disney resorts vary widely in layout, doing this research ahead can save money and improve your overall experience. Ultimately, the decision to upgrade comes down to your personal preferences and budget. For me, it’s about balancing convenience and cost—sometimes I choose Preferred rooms at certain resorts where the proximity really enhances my stay, but other times, a standard room works just fine. If you're unsure, using a travel agent or Disney planning service can be a great way to get personalized advice, as they can evaluate current offers and help you make the best choice based on your travel style and needs.
