How to get your first internship/job after college
Finding internships in college can be hard, but here are things I did that helped me complete 2 internships while in college and land a full time job (related to my degree) right after graduation!
1. ATTEND CAREER FAIRS/NETWORK
So many jobs are really about who you know! I’ve made so many connections and have landed so many interviews by attending career fairs.
2. Don’t burn bridges
If you don’t get a job somewhere, or something doesn’t work out how you thought it would, don’t burn that bridge. I’ve had employers from jobs that I backed out of or didn’t get who were willing to make calls for me to other employers, all because I still maintained a positive relationship with them.
3. If something is too good to be true, it probably is.
I’ve had an internship opportunity that was everything that I wanted and more. Long story short, it ended up being a disaster and I backed out of it and had to find a different internship. Point being, don’t believe everything someone tells you (and get agreements in writing lol)
4. LinkedIn and Facebook community pages have lots of opportunities.
I found my first internship via Facebook and I found my full time job through LinkedIn. Check on there for opportunities, you never know what you’ll find.
5. Utilize campus resources.
Go to your advisor for help or the campus career center if you are struggling to find an internship/job. They can provide you with a lot of connections and opportunities.
6. Apply early!
If you need an internship for credit, or are looking for a job post grad, APPLY EARLY!! I began applying for jobs at the start of my last semester and it relieved so much stress because I was able to do interviews early and got decisions back before I graduated.
7. Apply for positions even if you don’t think you will get them.
Applying for jobs even if you don’t think you’ll get them can be a great way to get your foot in the door. People will remember your resume later on, or they might offer you a different position they think you would do well at. I applied at my job on a whim thinking I wouldn’t hear back, and now I’m working for that company. You never know what can happen.
8. Be patient!
Waiting a long time can be discouraging, but be patient! The hiring process takes a long time, and that’s why it’s important to start applying early and be patient.
9. If you don’t get the job/internship, it’s not personal!
If a company says no, don’t take it to heart. When one door closes another one opens, and rejection is just redirection. You will find what’s meant for you!

Finding a job or internship after college can be challenging, but employing the right strategies can make a significant difference. Start early by researching companies and positions that interest you. Utilize LinkedIn optimally; ensure your profile is up-to-date, connect with industry professionals, and participate in relevant groups. Networking holds tremendous value; attend industry-related events and reach out to alumni who can provide insights into your desired field. Consider crafting a tailored resume for each application that highlights relevant skills and experiences. Practice your interview skills thoroughly by conducting mock interviews, and be ready to share specific examples from your internship projects. Patience and resilience are key as the hiring process can be lengthy. Remember, rejection often leads to greater opportunities. Stay positive, and don’t hesitate to seek feedback on your applications to improve future submissions. Additionally, consider volunteer opportunities related to your field as they can boost your resume while providing real-world experience.
