Date night Inspiration
Sometimes it feels like we can get into a bit of a rut when it comes to mixing things up for dates, especially as a young 20-something. Both my boyfriend and I go to college full-time and work for the university. And it can get expensive to go out for dates every week, so a lot of the times we just hang out and study or watch football to spend quality time together. But, it’s good to go out and actually present yourselves in a romantic way, because it’s reassuring for your relationship that you’ve both put a lot of effort into.
NHL games:
He loves hockey, and played it growing up, so I wanted to do something special for our 6 months and get us tickets. I got them almost 2 months in advance, and go us really great seats. He was really appreciative and it made me feel happy that he was enjoying it so much! We also ended up going the week beforehand on a whim because we both had off work 🤦♀️
Dinner:
It’s really tempting to just order something in and watch a movie or go to the bars and grab some pizza on the way home, but sometimes it’s nice to add a romantic touch to it. We split the sushi because it was super expensive, but I like when it can be just us talking and joking around, and doing everything else we would do at home, but alone and having our attention 100% on one another. These two photos were taken one day apart because I got back from football game and my fridge was empty. I was okay going hungry, but he insisted we go out, even though he got catering from the team.
Crumbl:
This one is super self explanatory and fun! We filmed a video just like those tiktok reviews, even though we only got two cookies. Then we sent it to our friends while we were waiting in the parking lot of the movie theater. We saw Deadpool 3, and even though he hated most of the movie, I was happy he indulged me and let me gush to him about the intricacies of each cameo and how the movie was NOT A FLOP when you consider the comics.
Golfing:
I get that golfing is kind of an expensive sport and not a lot of people have access or time for it, but we both love it. I only picked up golf this past spring, but I played softball my whole life and turns out I was a total natural. Again, it’s another way the two of us can get time alone, while also being active and outside.
MLB:
At this point you understand that we both are sports fanatics, and more importantly Chicago sports fans. We go to school in Illinois, and the drive to both the city and to St Louis isn’t terrible, so when he got us tickets to play the Cardinals I was super excited to make him follow me up to the Arch. Yes, he did yell at me for jumping when we were up so high, but that’s apart of the fun! Going to baseball games is just a great summer date idea because you can also plan it out with a group of people to meet up with.
Sky Park:
There were so many instances of meteor showers, borealis, and space events that went on this summer, and we drove out 45 minutes at night to a sky park to view all of them. We would lay out a blanket and pit on some music and sit and talk and look up at the infinite wonders. We also brought up some friends a few times, all of which stated they would be bringing their partners in the future!

Date nights can often feel repetitive, especially for college students pressed for time and budget. However, with some creativity, even simple outings can become special. Here are practical tips to enhance your date experiences. 1. **Plan Ahead**: Purchase tickets to sports events like NHL and MLB games in advance. Not only do they create excitement, but they can also be perfect for forming shared memories. Consider buying tickets for a series of games to make it more engaging for both partners. 2. **Romantic Dinner Ideas**: Instead of standard takeout, think about cooking together at home or choosing a unique cuisine to share. Sushi-making kits can spice things up, allowing for a fun, interactive dinner that fosters communication. 3. **Outdoor Activities**: Engage in outdoor sports like golf or hiking. This can offer a healthy and enjoyable way to bond while appreciating nature. Also, consider activities like stargazing; it creates an intimate atmosphere and a chance to reflect on your relationship. 4. **Themed Movie Nights**: Transform a typical movie night into an event. Set a theme around the genre, prepare snacks related to the movie, and create an ambiance with decorations or music to elevate the experience. 5. **Take Advantage of Local Events**: Keep an eye on community calendars for fun events or pop-up attractions, including food festivals or local concerts. These can provide new experiences right in your area without the hassle of distant travel. By incorporating these creative elements, you can foster a deeper connection with your partner while navigating the challenges of student life.
