12 Month Saturday Relationship Challenge

I saw this online and I thought it was genius! Does anyone else feel like they constantly want to do things their partner couldn't GAF about? My husband and I sadly don't share a ton of common interest. When we were dating we were lucky enough to forge some new ones by being open to trying things for each other. But as the years tick on we are more likely to do those things alone or with friends rather than make the other one come along when they don't care too much about the activity.

I loved this idea of two saturdays (or any day!) each month dedicated to doing something your partner wants to do. It seems like a great way to foster new interests together and get quality time.

Here's the idea:

One Saturday a month each partner gets to do whatever they want, and the other has go along with it and say

“YES”.

This means the challenge happens 2x a month (one Saturday each)

Ground Rules:

Decide on a budget. This isn’t a chance to trick your partner into spending money on you

Make geographical limitations.

Keep an open mind and positive attitude when it’s not your day!

The goal of the challenge is to give both partners a chance to do what they want with each other and hopefully foster new interests between the two of you.

... Read moreHey everyone! Since sharing the initial idea for the 12 Month Saturday Relationship Challenge, I've had so many of you ask for more tips on how to make it really work for your relationship. This challenge is truly designed to bring couples closer, foster new interests, and ensure you're both feeling heard and valued. It's about more than just doing an activity; it's about the connection you build along the way. One of the biggest takeaways from our experience with this "one Saturday a month each partner gets to do whatever they want" rule is how much it pushes you out of your comfort zones in the best way. For example, my partner is really into obscure historical documentaries, which isn't usually my jam. But by genuinely committing to saying 'YES' and keeping an open mind, I've actually learned some fascinating things and discovered a new appreciation for his passions. It’s not just about enduring; it’s about actively looking for the joy in their joy. Let's talk about those critical "Ground Rules." Establishing a budget upfront is a game-changer. We decided on a modest monthly limit, say $50-$100, which prevents any awkwardness or resentment later. This isn't a competition to see who can plan the most extravagant day; it's about shared experiences. Similarly, geographical limitations make it feasible. We agreed to keep our activities within a 30-minute drive, ensuring that travel time doesn't eat into our quality time. These boundaries actually spark more creativity in planning! And that "open mind" rule? It's the secret sauce for an invigorated relationship. It means no complaining, no eye-rolling, and no passive-aggressive comments. Instead, try to engage! Ask questions, learn something new, or simply enjoy seeing your partner light up. It’s a wonderful way to practice active listening and show genuine interest in what makes them tick. You might even surprise yourself by enjoying something you never thought you would! To make the most of this challenge, I’d suggest keeping a little journal or a shared note on your phone. After each Saturday, jot down what you did, what you enjoyed, and maybe even something new you learned about your partner or yourself. This isn't homework; it's a way to reflect on your interpersonal bonding and appreciate the effort you're both putting in. It also gives you ideas for future activities, helping you foster new interests together organically. Some common questions we've heard: "What if my partner always picks something I truly dislike?" Or "What if one person is bad at planning?" Variety is key: Encourage your partner to pick different types of activities throughout the year. If they chose something super active last month, maybe suggest something more relaxed for their next turn. Shared planning: Offer to help with the logistics for their chosen day. It shows support and eases their burden, making the experience better for both of you. It's still their choice, but your help makes it happen smoothly. This 12-month relationship challenge is a fantastic way to break routine, inject spontaneity, and consistently prioritize your connection. It really does strengthen your relationship ground rules and reminds you why you fell in love in the first place. Give it a try for even just a month – you might be amazed at the positive changes!
