Shows that give summer vibes

1. Something's Gotta Give, 2003

⭐️6.7/10

– This movie took me by surprise, I wasn't sure if I could handle watching old actors getting it on but this movie turned out to be a great romantic comedy. Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton always give their 100% best in their performances, they did a great job in their roles. It would have been nice to see more input from Frances McDormand and Keanu Reeves, but otherwise I really enjoyed the movie.

2. Clueless, 1995

⭐️6.9/10

– This movie is way above so many of the others of its' kind. It's consumately likable, runny, sweet and sharp- the script is a killer, and the acting is fun and enjoyable.

Part of the success of the film is due to the fact that it appeals to several different audiences, and on multiple levels. I first watched this movie with my mom, who loved the link it has to Jane Austen's Emma- all the main characters and the plot are direct modern equivalents to the novel.

For instance, the famous passage in Emma inwhich Harriet burns all her "mementos" of Mr. Elton becomes the scene where Tai does so infront of Cher's gasfire. From this perspective alone, the movie is so fun and sharp to watch- even if your forte isn't usually American Teen High School comedy!

3. The Parent Trap, 1998

⭐️6.6/10

– This is one of those rare cases where a terrific movie is equaled by its remake. Hayley Mills carried the dual roles of twins learning of each other's existence and concocting a plot to reunite their divorced parents splendidly in the '60's version, and Lindsay Lohan showed wonderful comedic talent at an early age in this delightful remake.

It's a Disney flick, so the comedy is family slapstick variety as you would expect. The evil stepmother-to-be is over-the-top evil (even called Cruella De Ville by one of the girls), and she's a character you love to hate. The obvious chemistry of the parents (Randy Quaid and Natasha Richardson) is great, and begs a question which is never answered to satisfaction, "Why did they split up in the first place?" Everything in the film symbolically shows that they were made for each other: even their respective maid and butler take a shine to each other.

4. Wet Hot American Summer, 2001

⭐️6.5/10

– This movie made me so happy. The performers are so gifted. The details in the art direction and characterizations were pretty spot-on too. Amy Poehler in particular delighted me. That girl rocks my world. Everyone has their moment though. In this time when parodies are almost more common than original ideas, this movie stands out as one of the best.

5. Real Women Have Curves, 2002

⭐️6.9/10

– Real Women Have Curves is a very enjoyable film, and also a very real film. It deals with very real issues concerning women and especially young women. The main character is of the Hispanic persuasion and though she is a very bright girl and could possibly get into a good collage she runs the risk of being swallowed up in the death trap job of making dresses that cost them 18 dollars to make but get sold in department stores for 800 dollars. Her mother keeps telling her she's overweight overlooking the fact that she is heavier than her daughter. This film is very much set in the real world, and the problems facing the characters are problems we all face at one time or another like "can I pay the rent on time?" or "will this person like me for who I am instead of what I look like?" Within the context of the film the answers to those questions are yes, and yes which may be one of the reasons this film is so enjoyable. America Ferrera's performance is reminiscent of the kind of girl you would see at your local high school, and the message of this movie is one that more people should take to heart. Be who you are, not who others want you to be, follow your dreams, and the like. I was surprised with how frankly this film deals with teenage sexuality, and how it challenges the concept of what beauty is in modern culture makes it a very progressive film indeed.

Are you into movies like this? What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments.

... Read moreAs we embrace the summer season, watching movies that resonate with the sunny vibes can elevate the mood significantly. Some films like 'Something's Gotta Give' stir emotions with their charming romance, shared by the age-gap comedic romance of Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, reminding us that love knows no bounds. Similarly, 'Clueless' stands out not just as a film but as a cultural icon, expertly blending humor with life lessons in youthful exuberance, and its connections to classic literature like Jane Austen's 'Emma' prove its depth. On a different note, 'The Parent Trap' delights viewers with its heartwarming story of twin sisters reuniting, and showcases the joy of family, while inviting laughter from all ages. Then, there's 'Wet Hot American Summer', a parody that pays homage to the summer camp experience, leaving us in stitches with its absurdity and charm. It’s not only entertaining but a reminder of carefree days gone by. Finally, 'Real Women Have Curves' offers a fresh perspective on body positivity, youth, and embracing one’s true self amid societal expectations, making it a relatable viewing choice. Each of these films brings its unique summer essence, whether through love, humor, or important social themes, allowing audiences to reflect and feel inspired. As you plan your summer watch list, these gems are sure to provide the perfect escape that resonates with the long sunny days and warm, lingering nights.
