1. The Rules of Attraction, 2002

– An incisive perspective on the demise of romance and dating in college culture, with a deep dive into how that affects privileged kids at a liberal arts college. The Rules of Attraction is an insightful social commentary on the death of romance and mocks pretentious, self-absorbed, wealthy students who are too vapid and devoid of any meaning/anything worth caring about in their college lives. The dark humor is solid and the three lead performances (James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, and Ian Somerhalder) are fantastic! And the eclectic music selection really heightens the atmosphere, emotions (or lack of) in each scene. Side note: the Richard "Dick" scenes are a laugh riot.
This film earns its cult following. The Rules of Attraction is worth a watch or occasional repeat viewings.
2. The Village, 2004

– This appears to be a really divisive movie. It seems to me that people wanted another Sixth Sense and when The Village arrived, people were disappointed. Maybe the distributor didn't help by giving the impression it's a horror movie. It isn't. Or maybe some have taken against the writer/director. It's a story of someone going to great lengths for someone they love. It just so happens there's a twist on the way. I've recently rewatched The Village after many years. And whilst I knew the twist, there was plenty to keep me entertained and I think it's held up well. Put it this way, I persuaded my 14 year old to watch it with me, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. There were jump scares, good performances and it looked good. The twist completely wrong footed her, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it.
3. Beyond the Lights, 2014

– My feelings on this are basically just like every other person who saw it. It does have some biting, realistic insight into just how cruel and harsh the entertainment industry is, but the romance and the narrative are quite predictable. I probably actually enjoyed it more than my rating, but it's just way too formulaic and it's a shame when it started off better and it could've just been something more. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is really the best thing about it, delivering her all and giving even her most cliché of scenes life and passion. She's very charismatic and has a very strong screen presence, I hope she gets more roles after this because she would certainly deserve it.
4. Stardust, 2007

– Surprised at how much I enjoyed this. The characters were really well developed, the world building was fantastic and the action was really enjoyable. Mark Strong is great as ever as the villain, but it has to be Robert DeNiro who just steals the film in the weirdest role I could think of for him. The story is genuinely intriguing, but it's the world building that really did it for me. I really felt immersed in this fantasy world, and the exposition was delivered really naturally. As much as I have gripes with some of Matthew Vaughn's films, the actual direction is never the issue, and it's quite good here too. Now my main issue is that the film is trying to juggle quite a lot of storylines, and it feels a bit rushed as a result. You could probably cut Michelle Pfieffer's plotline down quite a bit in order to concentrate on the main storyline more. But overall, this is a surprisingly fun film that I would definitely recommend
5. Daredevil, 2003

– This movie is an exciting and excellent movie. The special effects and lighting is amazing, and all in all, the picture is superb. Also, the theme is a good one - he is an underdog, being blind, and fights for the underdogs, considering his job as an attorney. But he proves that he is much better than that when he serves justice at night as Daredevil. I dearly love how he does several stunts and tricks.
It is exciting to watch him do insane stunts like jumping right off buildings and then regaining his balance. All the stunts are a piece of art! But maybe, next time, more criminals. I applaud this movie and hope for a sequel!
