Must-Watch WTF? Movies ⁉️
1. I’m Thinking of Ending Things, 2020

🎬Review: Usually I recommend people to not watch or read reviews, just enjoy the film in their own way. This one, though, is better if you are well prepared for it. It's a twohour fifteen minute film that requires another twenty minutes for the obligatory YouTube videothat explains what you've just seen. Foundflix has a nice Explained for it, but watch or read whattever. Because you need to understand you are going to sit through the slow, oh so sslow, dissolution of a man's mind, complete with heavy references to books and films and rmusicals, awkward scenes that make you want to skip forward, long internal monologues, the whole thing. It is alsorth mentioning that this film is based of a book, one that is not written by Kaufman, but right up his alley. You might want to check that out before attempting to see the film.
Once you know you are going to see that, you won't feel cheated when finaly starting to watch the movie and realizing it will not entertain you at all. Maybe it will make ynder the nature of reality and inner life, maybe it will make you grab a gun and kill youurself or your parents, maybe it will make you write a dissertation on it, so other people get what you gotat least friends will honor you for surviving through it, but relaxing entertainment or any sortpleasure that is not purely intellectual you will not get.
There are no twists at the end, the basic premise is madee clear rather soon and from that moment you will wait for the film to end. There is no hero journey,no big reveal of information that will guide you through life, no story. The only beautiful thing in the movie isy. So get into your Dostoyevski reading mood or whatever and onlythen attempt a viewing. Just trying on a whim and then complaining about it won't cut it. You havee to work to see this film. Only when you're prepared to do that work will I recommend it to you
2. The Platform, 2019

🎬Review: I liked this movie and found the acting of all the actors very noteworthy.
Fans of Snowpiercer n Cube will definitely enjoy this. One of the best part is that the director made sure that that the camera doesn't linger much on the gory aspects n even the unpleasant stuff is fast paced.
3. Velvet Buzzsaw, 2019

🎬Review: It's a bit ironic, this film that wants to explore the vapid sshallowness of the fine art world in a stylish horror movie setting... ends up inviting the very same criticisms the finely dressed tastemakers in the film fling about. Ok. Buzzwords aside. I did enjoy this film more than I disliked it. But in all earnestnest, it was by a hair. Knowing this came from the same quy who made thhe excellent psochological thriller Nightcrawler. This is like asketchbook of ideas for a giallo-inspired slasEach individually awesome. But there's no real throughline to keep us going. Peoplepop up until they die gruesome deaths. It feels kind of slapped together haphazardly. I expected more from Gilroy.
4. Annihilation, 2018

🎬Review: After watching this film I read the reviews voted "most helpful," which all were long lists of plot holes and logical inconsistencies. They are absolutely right. I didn't thought it while watching the film, but when it's pointed out, yeah, nothing in this movie makes much sense but I still really liked it. It's creepy and atmospheric and more concernethe psychology of people on a suicide mission than on the nuts and bolts of scientific investigation. It's often intense , usually beautiful, well acted, and had some reallly weird and mesmerizing moments
I won't argue that you should forgive it for its plot holes, or that ithas any deep meaning, or anything like that. In fact, it's probably easier to make a convincing argument against the movie than for it. I'm just saying, I really liked it.
ADDENDUM: I looked at the user reviews recently (2024)and the top reviews are no longer lists of plot holes. The people who enjoyed the movie, like me, have since my reviev pushed the naysayers down. Which I fully support.
