Manatee Visits Kayaker on Orange River

The cooler months (November to March) are generally the best time for sightings, as more manatees congregate in the warm springs. Early mornings are also ideal, as the water is often calmer and there are fewer boats. When kayaking, paddle slowly and quietly, keeping an eye out for tell-tale signs like snouts breaking the surface, large circular ripples, or even a dark shadow beneath your boat. Polarized sunglasses can also be incredibly helpful for spotting them underwater. While my visit was on the Orange River, other well-known manatee hotspots in Florida include Crystal River, Blue Spring State Park, and Three Sisters Springs. Each offers unique opportunities to see these incredible animals. Having a manatee visit your kayak is a profound reminder of the delicate balance of our ecosystems and the importance of conservation. These peaceful creatures face threats from habitat loss and boat collisions, making our respectful interactions even more vital.
