I didn’t have time to make a better post today but have some photos of my dog <3
Her name is Leia and she is almost 10 years old! We are currently working on getting her to loose some weight as since she has arthritis and deteriorating hips it’s hard to get her moving 😬
... Read moreIt’s hard to put into words just how much joy and love my sweet Leia brings into my life every single day. When I say she’s my favorite thing in the world, I truly mean it. She’s not just a pet; she’s family, a constant companion through thick and thin for almost a decade. This beautiful black dog with her soulful eyes has taught me so much about unconditional love, patience, and living in the moment.
As she approaches her tenth birthday, our journey together has shifted. While she still loves her walks, we’ve had to adapt. Her developing arthritis and hip issues mean those long hikes through the forest we used to enjoy are now shorter, gentler strolls. It breaks my heart a little to see her slow down, but it also makes me appreciate every single step we take together, even if it’s just a leisurely pace around the block with her favorite leash. I’ve learned to listen to her cues more closely, ensuring she’s comfortable and happy. Sometimes, a gentle paddle in shallow water is a good way for her to get some low-impact exercise without straining her joints.
One of our biggest focuses right now is helping her lose some weight. It’s a challenge, especially with reduced mobility, but it's crucial for easing the pressure on her joints. We’ve adjusted her diet, and instead of just relying on long walks, we incorporate more gentle playtimes and mental stimulation. It’s a slow process, but seeing her move a little more freely makes every effort worth it. It’s all about showing her love through dedicated care, even when it means making tough choices about her favorite treats!
Leia’s personality shines through even as she ages. She still gets incredibly excited for car rides, always ready to be my co-pilot. And even on days when she’s feeling a bit down due to discomfort, a silly moment, like trying on her checkered sunglasses for a quick photo, can bring out that playful sparkle in her eyes. It’s those small, everyday moments that fill my heart.
After a good day of gentle activity, there’s nothing she loves more than curling up on her favorite rug or snuggling into her bed, often found deeply sleeping in a sunbeam. Providing her with soft, supportive places to rest is so important for a senior dog. I’ve noticed how much a comfortable spot helps her recover and feel her best.
Caring for an older dog with health issues isn't always easy, but the love and loyalty you receive back are immeasurable. If you have an aging dog, my biggest piece of advice is to be patient, observe their needs, and cherish every single moment. Their love is a precious gift, and being there for them through all stages of their life is the greatest way we can show our appreciation. Leia reminds me daily that true love isn't just about the fun times, but about the commitment, compassion, and unwavering bond that grows stronger with each passing year.
