Fairbanks, Alaska

... Read moreYou know, when I first planned my trip to Fairbanks, Alaska, I mostly thought about the Northern Lights in winter, but let me tell you, summer in Fairbanks has its own incredible magic, especially at the Georgeson Botanical Garden! I stumbled upon it during what turned out to be peak peony season, and honestly, you just can't beat it. The sight of those vibrant pink, red, and white peonies in full bloom was absolutely stunning, creating a real paradise of color. It felt like stepping into a painting, with the lush green foliage and tall evergreen trees forming a perfect backdrop against the bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds. But the Georgeson Botanical Garden is so much more than just peonies, even though they truly steal the show when they're out. I spent hours exploring and was fascinated by how many different plants thrive in this unique subarctic climate. It's actually a research facility of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, which makes it even cooler – you're literally walking through living experiments! They have a fantastic array of vegetables, herbs, and flowers adapted to the long daylight hours of the Alaskan summer. I particularly loved the herb garden and the various trial beds where they're testing new varieties. It's not just pretty; it's educational too! If you're planning a visit, I'd definitely recommend checking their website for current bloom times, especially if you're chasing those gorgeous peonies. Generally, late June to mid-July is prime time for many of the flowers. The garden is typically open to the public during daylight hours in the summer months, and while it's free to enter, donations are always welcome to support their amazing work. There's plenty of free parking available, and the paths are well-maintained, making it accessible for everyone. I'd say carve out at least a couple of hours, or even half a day, to really soak it all in. Bring your camera, because every corner offers a photo opportunity, from the intricate patterns of the ground covers to the grandeur of the perennial borders. There are benches scattered throughout where you can just sit and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It's such a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle, a true hidden gem in Fairbanks. Whether you're a gardening enthusiast or just looking for a beautiful spot to relax and connect with nature, the Georgeson Botanical Garden is an absolute must-visit. Trust me, you won't regret adding it to your Fairbanks itinerary!
