... Read moreHey everyone! If you’re anything like me, you probably have a few band tees lying around that you love but don't wear as often as you'd like. Maybe they're a bit too big, or you just want to give them a fresh, unique twist. That’s exactly how I felt about my My Chemical Romance tee, and that's why I decided to turn it into an easy lace-up band tee top! It's such a rewarding project, and seriously, anyone can do it.
First things first, choosing the perfect band tee is key. Look for one with a graphic you adore, and consider the fabric. Thicker cotton tees hold their shape really well for this kind of DIY. Once you've got your tee, you'll want to gather your materials. Besides your trusty scissors, you'll need some grommets (a kit with the setting tool is super handy and affordable online or at craft stores), some black ribbon, and optional lace trim if you want that extra touch. Having a tube top or a fitted tank top you like as a reference for cutting will make your life so much easier!
When it comes to cutting, don't be afraid! Lay your reference top over your band tee, lining up the graphic exactly where you want it. Use fabric chalk or even just a pen to mark out your desired shape. Remember to leave a little extra seam allowance if you plan to hem the edges, but for an edgy, raw look, you can skip that. I usually go for a raw edge because it adds to the alt vibe. For the side panels where the lacing will go, you'll want to cut two narrower strips. If you're using a single tee for both front and back, make sure the graphic is centered on your front piece.
Now for the grommets! This is where the magic happens. After you've cut your front and back pieces, lay them out and mark where you want your grommets. I usually space mine about an inch apart along the side edges. A small sharp tool (often included in grommet kits) helps you punch the holes. Then, follow the kit instructions to set your grommets. It’s surprisingly simple and makes the top look super professional and durable. If you decided to add lace trim, now's the time to hand-stitch or machine-sew it along the top and bottom raw edges before you start lacing.
Finally, the lacing! Thread your black ribbon through the grommets. You can do a simple criss-cross pattern, or get creative with a ladder lace for a different look. The beauty of the lace-up design is that it's adjustable, so you can make it as snug or relaxed as you like. Once it's all laced up, try it on! You've just created a custom, stylish, and easy top band tee that's perfect for expressing your unique style. It looks amazing paired with high-waisted jeans, a flowy skirt, or even layered over a long-sleeve mesh top for colder weather. Happy crafting!
