Commonly Dismissive Things People Say

7/9 Edited to

... Read moreHaving lived with chronic conditions and invisible illnesses myself, I can relate deeply to the feelings of frustration that come when others dismiss what you experience daily. Phrases like "You're exaggerating," or "It's just growing pains," not only invalidate the real suffering but also leave you feeling isolated and misunderstood. What people often don’t realize is the invisible toll conditions like chronic pain, fatigue, mental health challenges, or neurodivergence take. For example, chronic pain doesn't disappear just because you look fine on the outside; it’s an unpredictable battle that can sap your energy and leave you mentally and physically exhausted. Sometimes, even restful sleep doesn’t relieve the exhaustion, often described by those with chronic conditions as ‘running on empty’ because their body fights a war the eye cannot see. Mental health struggles are equally misunderstood. Telling someone to "try harder" or "calm down" ignores the complexity of mental illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, or executive dysfunction. These conditions interfere with daily functioning, making simple tasks feel monumental. Kindness and patience are crucial because recovery and coping are not about willpower alone. From personal experience, what truly helps is when others listen without judgment and offer support without trying to fix or dismiss the problem. It’s about recognizing that chronic and invisible illnesses don’t have an age limit or a visible scar; they don’t fit neatly into stereotypes or assumptions. Being told you’re "too young to be in pain" or "too sensitive" only adds to the loneliness. A valuable approach is the ‘spoon theory,’ which explains how every action costs 'spoons'—a metaphor for limited energy. Unlike machines, we cannot just ‘try harder’ and produce more. Understanding this fosters empathy and nurtures supportive relationships. To anyone supporting a friend or loved one with such struggles: remember, your belief and kindness matter more than you may think. Words can wound or heal. Offering patience, flexibility, and simply being there creates a safe space where they can feel seen and valued. We all have hidden battles; the compassionate act is to acknowledge those battles and meet people where they are, not where you expect them to be.
