Millennials - Do you remember this?
My mother sheltered me as a kid. Couldn’t watch Ghostbusters. Only listened to Christian music. No Halloween or Trick or Treating. But why did she think this show was appropriate for a 5 year old? I still remember the nightmares!
Growing up as a millennial was a unique experience, often filled with strict parental guidance regarding media consumption. Many parents, driven by their beliefs, chose to shield their children from certain movies and TV shows, fearing they might have lasting effects. For instance, movies like Ghostbusters were seen as innocent fun, yet for some children, they became sources of genuine nightmares. The contrast between what was deemed appropriate and the actual impact of these shows led to various cultural discussions about media influences on children. The 90s also brought a surge of horror-themed content that snuck into many households, raising the question: how much should parents monitor their children's viewing habits? This dilemma resonates with many who recall similar strict rules, such as no Halloween festivities or only listening to specific genres of music like Christian tracks. The emotional and psychological effects of such restrictions often linger into adulthood, resulting in complex memories tied to trust and fear. In the age of social media, these conversations have resurfaced, with millennials sharing their stories and seeking validation of their experiences. Did those early restrictions protect us, or did they create unnecessary fears? As we reminisce, we can navigate through these memories together, highlighting the culture we grew up in while also allowing room for healing and understanding the effects of childhood media exposure.

I told my youngest daughter who will soon be 37. She needed to watch Goonies and I told her how amazing and how wonderful the movie is. She could not get all the way through the entire movie and started having super bad dreams... KIDS today... 😆
