Things I wish my therapist would have told me …

1. Your feelings are valid but don’t fall

Victim to them.

2. Your instinct already told you the answer.

3. Don’t replay hurtful memories because your brain cannot decipher past and present.

4. Breathing (focusing on exhaling) is actually the best way to reduce anxiety and return to a normal state (tells your vagus nerve you’re good).

One of the key lessons is that your feelings are indeed valid, but they should not dictate your actions. It’s crucial to refrain from falling into the trap of victimhood, choosing instead to recognize your own strength and resilience. Trusting your instincts is fundamental; intuitive responses often lead to the correct path forward in your healing journey. Additionally, it’s vital to understand that replaying past traumas can hinder your progress. The brain sometimes struggles to differentiate between memories and present experiences, causing unnecessary distress. Simple techniques, such as focusing on your exhalation during breathwork, can significantly reduce anxiety and signal to your body that it is safe to relax. This practice not only calms your nervous system but also supports mental clarity and emotional stability. Incorporating regular breathwork into your routine can serve as a powerful tool in your self-care arsenal, promoting both physical and emotional well-being. These insights are essential for those on a journey toward healing, providing a foundation for healthier coping mechanisms and a deeper understanding of oneself.
