Trying to fit 3 patients into a 15-minute time slot 🤯 It’s chaos… and somehow it always happens on my busiest days 😵💫 #nursepractitioner #pediatrics #pediatrician #familyplan #saxophone
As a nurse practitioner working in pediatrics, I completely relate to those hectic days when you're scheduled to see three patients in just 15 minutes. It’s a real challenge to provide quality care when time feels so limited. One trick I’ve found helpful is preparing ahead by reviewing patient charts right before the appointments. This allows me to anticipate additional requests, like parents bringing in siblings for quick checks—which always reminds me to keep some buffer time for unexpected needs. In fact, there was a day when a mom asked me to take a quick peek in her younger child’s ears during an already packed visit. Managing these "two-fer" situations requires quick thinking and prioritization skills. Noise distractions, such as a loud saxophone playing in the background, add another layer of complexity but also remind me of the importance of maintaining focus under pressure. Using noise-canceling strategies or arranging the consultation space to minimize interruptions can help maintain a calm environment. Balancing family planning discussions alongside pediatric care demands clear communication and empathy. Taking a moment to explain concise but thorough care plans ensures families leave confident about next steps. Over time, embracing flexible scheduling and effective communication with office staff to stagger appointments helps reduce the chaos of back-to-back slots. Despite the pressure, these experiences have sharpened my multitasking abilities and reinforced why patient-centered care remains my top priority, no matter how busy the day gets.
