Sterling’s choice
More like Sophie’s choice… Sterling really wanted to do 125 miles today… just wasn’t in the cards for me 🤪 100 degree day + 15-20 mph winds = BONKING. Any ride is better than no ride though! #cycling #husband #makegoodchoices #texasheat #bonk
Cycling in extreme weather conditions like blazing heat and strong winds can be as much a mental challenge as a physical one. From personal experience, attempting to complete long distances such as 125 miles on a day with 100-degree temperatures and sustained 15-20 mph winds is tough and often results in hitting the dreaded 'bonk'—a state of severe fatigue caused by depleted energy reserves. This experience taught me the importance of listening to my body and adjusting my goals accordingly. On such days, hydration becomes absolutely critical; I found that increasing my water and electrolyte intake before and during the ride helped sustain my performance. It's also helpful to plan routes that offer shade or allow for breaks in cooler spots. Despite not hitting the original target distance, completing a slightly shorter ride still delivered a sense of accomplishment and kept my training consistent. Most importantly, it reinforced the mantra that any ride, even one cut short by tough conditions, is better than no ride at all. This mindset keeps motivation high and helps prevent burnout or injury from pushing too hard. For fellow cyclists encountering similar weather challenges, my advice is to prioritize safety and smart choices—adjust mileage, monitor body signals, and fuel properly to make the most out of your ride while staying healthy.
