Visiting the Singapore Air Force Museum was an eye-opening experience that deepened my appreciation for RSAF’s heritage. Beyond the well-known aircraft, exploring the stories behind the BAC Strikemaster, Hawker Hunter, F-5 Tiger II, Alouette III, and Super Puma gave me new insights into Singapore's aviation milestones. The BAC Strikemaster captured my attention as the plane that kickstarted pilot training in 1969. It’s fascinating how this tiny jet laid the foundation for RSAF’s skilled pilots. The Hawker Hunter's versatility amazed me — a true workhorse serving in fighter, reconnaissance, and training roles during the early 1970s. Reaching supersonic speed with the F-5 Tiger II, RSAF soared into a new era of air power and precision. The helicopter stories were equally compelling. The Alouette III, RSAF’s first helicopter squadron, was part of pioneering missions like overseas rescue in Pahang, highlighting the bravery of early airmen. What left a lasting impression was the Super Puma, Singapore’s first medium-lift helicopter, known for search and rescue and troop transport. Its role in carrying the NDP state flag for 14 years, along with setting a world record for the largest flown flag, speaks to its iconic status. Since the museum is now closed for upgrades, preserving these stories feels even more important.
