Rollo Wins, Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

... Read moreOkay, fellow Smashers, let's talk about one of the most fundamental yet often misunderstood mechanics in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: the roll! When I first started playing, I felt like I was constantly getting hit and struggled with escaping pressure. I’d just shield and get grabbed, or jump into an attack. Then, I realized the power of a well-timed roll. It literally transformed my gameplay, and I want to share what I've learned so you can level up too! What Exactly Is Rolling? In Smash Ultimate, rolling is your primary evasive maneuver on the ground. It allows your character to quickly move a short distance left or right while being completely invincible for a few frames. Think of it as a quick teleport through danger! There are two main types: Normal Roll: Performed by holding your shield button and simultaneously pressing left or right on your control stick. Your character will dash in that direction. Spot Dodge: This is similar but you stay in place. Hold shield and press down on the control stick. You'll briefly become invincible without moving, great for baiting attacks directly in front of you. When to Use Your Roll (And Why It's a Game Changer) I remember getting absolutely wrecked by aggressive opponents until I started incorporating rolls defensively. Here's when I found them most useful: Dodging Projectiles & Attacks: The most obvious use! If an opponent throws out a slow, telegraphed move or a projectile, a quick roll can get you out of the way and even into a better position to punish them. I used to just block Fox's lasers, but rolling through them lets me close the distance! Escaping Shield Pressure: Ever find yourself locked in shield, getting pelted by attacks, just waiting to get grabbed? A roll can get you out of that sticky situation! Roll behind your opponent to escape their grab range and put them in a vulnerable spot. This was a huge revelation for me. Repositioning: Sometimes, you just need to adjust your spacing. A roll can quickly move you closer or further away from your opponent, helping you set up your next attack or escape a dangerous area. I often use it to quickly get to the ledge for recovery. Baiting & Punishing: This is where rolls get really spicy. You can intentionally roll through an opponent's attack, knowing you'll be invincible, and then hit them with a fast attack of your own as they recover from their miss. My favorite is rolling through a strong smash attack and then landing a quick jab combo. The Golden Rule: Don't Spam It! This is probably the biggest mistake I made when I first discovered rolling. It felt so powerful that I'd roll constantly, especially when under pressure. But here's the catch: after you perform a roll, there's a brief period of "roll lag" where you can't act again, and your invincibility frames are gone. If your opponent predicts your roll, they can easily punish you. I learned this the hard way against a really good Falcon player who would just charge a smash attack and release it exactly where my roll would end. Ouch! My Personal Tips for Mastering the Roll: Observe Your Opponent: Are they aggressive? Do they tend to use certain attacks? Learning their patterns will help you predict when a roll will be most effective. Mix It Up: Don't always roll in the same direction or always spot dodge. Keep your opponent guessing! Sometimes, not rolling at all and just holding shield, or jumping, can be the best option. Practice Invincibility Frames: Go into training mode and set a CPU to constantly use an attack (like Ganondorf's jab). Practice rolling through it perfectly. Feel out those invincibility windows. It takes time, but it's so worth it! Use Spot Dodge for Close Quarters: For attacks that hit directly in front of you, a spot dodge is often better than a roll, as it keeps you in place, ready to counter. I struggled with this at first, always rolling away, which sometimes put me in a worse position. Learning to roll effectively in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a journey, not a destination. It’s about timing, prediction, and knowing your character. It’s not just about dodging; it’s about strategic movement that can open up opportunities for you to win. So, next time you're in a match, try to be more mindful of your rolls. You might just surprise yourself with how much you improve!
